Target hyperscalers and their contractors
Amazon, Google, and Microsoft build data centers at scale and routinely sponsor workers through staffing partners and direct-hire programs. Their general contractors, firms managing MEP and civil work, often sponsor independently and are worth targeting separately.
Frame your degree precisely
H-1B eligibility requires a specialty occupation with a directly related degree. Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or construction management degrees align well. A general business or unrelated degree creates risk, even for experienced candidates in senior PM roles.
Prioritize roles with an engineering or PE component
Positions requiring a licensed engineer or specific technical discipline are more defensible as specialty occupations under H-1B standards. If you hold a PE license, lead with it, it strengthens both the employer's petition and your overall immigration profile significantly.
Understand that LCA filings signal real sponsorship intent
Employers must file a Labor Condition Application before any H-1B petition. Companies with recent data center LCA filings on DOL disclosure data have already shown willingness to sponsor, these employers are more likely to move quickly through the process with you.
EB-3 is a realistic long-term path for skilled tradespeople
If your role doesn't meet H-1B specialty occupation standards, EB-3 skilled worker classification may apply. It requires PERM labor certification and takes longer, but it leads to a green card and is used regularly in construction for non-degree roles.
Apply before the H-1B lottery registration window closes
Employer registration for the H-1B lottery opens in March each year for an October 1 start date. Missing this window means waiting 12 more months. Identify sponsoring employers early and begin conversations well before February to stay on track.

Find Data Center Construction JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do data center construction jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Some do, but it depends on the specific role. Positions like electrical engineer, MEP project manager, or construction engineer with a directly related bachelor's degree generally qualify as specialty occupations. General superintendent or site foreman roles typically don't meet the H-1B standard, since USCIS requires a degree in a specific discipline to be a normal requirement for the position.
Which visa types are most commonly used to sponsor data center construction workers?
H-1B is the most common for engineers and project managers with a relevant degree. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles under USMCA. EB-3 skilled worker and professional categories are used for green card sponsorship, particularly when a role doesn't meet the H-1B specialty occupation threshold but the employer is willing to run PERM.
How do I find data center construction employers who actually sponsor visas?
Browse Migrate Mate to find data center construction roles from employers with verified sponsorship history. DOL LCA disclosure data also shows which companies have filed labor condition applications for construction-adjacent roles, a strong signal of sponsorship intent. Hyperscale cloud providers and their top-tier general contractors file the highest volumes and are worth prioritizing in your search.
Does my degree need to be in engineering to qualify for H-1B in this field?
Not necessarily engineering specifically, but it must be directly related to the role. A degree in construction management, electrical engineering, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering typically supports a petition for most data center construction roles. A general business degree would create issues. USCIS also accepts a combination of education and specialized experience when no single degree matches the role exactly.
Are approval rates for H-1B petitions in construction roles lower than in tech?
Yes, generally. USCIS scrutinizes construction-related H-1B petitions more closely because the specialty occupation argument is less straightforward than for software engineering. Petition quality matters significantly here, a strong employer support letter, detailed job description, and documentation showing the role requires a specific bachelor's degree all reduce denial risk. Working with an experienced immigration attorney is especially important for construction roles.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Data Center Construction jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
