How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Digital Product Management
Target companies with a history of H-1B filings
Employers who have sponsored H-1B visas before understand the process and are less likely to back out. Focus your search on mid-to-large tech firms and enterprise software companies with dedicated immigration support.
Align your degree to the role explicitly
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree field and the job. Degrees in computer science, information systems, business with a technology concentration, or engineering tend to hold up well for digital product management roles.
Get involved in the H-1B lottery process early
H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Confirm your employer will register you in time. Missing the window means waiting another full year, so treat the March deadline as non-negotiable.
Highlight cross-functional leadership in your application materials
Sponsoring employers want to see that you can lead engineers, designers, and stakeholders without direct authority. Product managers who demonstrate this clearly are harder to replace, which makes sponsorship easier to justify internally.
Ask about cap-exempt sponsorship if you work in education or nonprofits
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated employers are exempt from the H-1B cap. If you're open to these sectors, you can bypass the lottery entirely and start as soon as USCIS approves.
Consider the O-1A if you have a strong track record
Product managers with documented impact, speaking credits, published work, or industry recognition may qualify for the O-1A extraordinary ability visa. It bypasses the lottery and has no annual cap, making it worth exploring seriously.

Is digital product management considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, digital product management is generally accepted as a specialty occupation by USCIS. The role requires theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, typically demonstrated through a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a closely related field. Approvals are common, though USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence if the degree field is not clearly tied to the specific role.
What degree do I need for a sponsored digital product manager role?
Most employers and USCIS expect a bachelor's degree in a field directly related to the position. Computer science, information systems, business with a technology focus, or engineering are the strongest fits. A general business degree alone can sometimes be challenged. If your degree is in an adjacent field, having several years of relevant product management experience strengthens the petition considerably.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a visa for product management roles?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this. It filters job listings by sponsorship willingness, so you can search digital product management roles without wading through positions that won't consider visa holders. Employers listed there have indicated openness to sponsorship, which saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking after the fact.
Can I switch from OPT or STEM OPT to H-1B as a product manager?
Yes, and it's one of the most common transitions for international students in product roles. Your employer submits your H-1B registration in March, and if selected, files the full petition for an October 1 start. If you're on STEM OPT, you may have up to three years of work authorization to bridge the gap, giving you multiple lottery cycles if needed.
Are there visa options for digital product managers if they don't get selected in the H-1B lottery?
Several alternatives exist. The L-1B visa works if your current employer has a U.S. office and you've worked abroad for at least one year. The O-1A is viable if you have strong recognition in the field. Australians can pursue the E-3. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under TN status. Each has different eligibility requirements, but none depend on the H-1B lottery.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Digital Product Management jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
