How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Associate Director Market Access
Target biotech and pharma employers specifically
Biotech and pharmaceutical companies file more H-1B petitions than nearly any other sector. Focusing your search on mid-to-large biopharma firms significantly increases your odds of finding an employer willing to sponsor your visa from the start.
Lead with your payer and reimbursement expertise
Employers sponsoring this role need someone who can navigate formulary access, coverage negotiations, and value-based contracting. Positioning your resume around measurable outcomes in these areas makes the sponsorship investment feel straightforward to hiring managers.
Clarify your visa status early in the process
Associate Director roles involve senior-level hiring decisions with long timelines. Disclosing your sponsorship needs before the final round avoids late-stage offer complications and signals professionalism, especially at companies with established immigration programs.
Confirm your degree aligns with the specialty occupation standard
H-1B approval for this role requires a directly related bachelor's degree or higher. Degrees in health economics, life sciences, public health, or pharmacy are well-accepted. A business degree alone may require additional documentation showing field-specific relevance.
Ask about cap-exempt employers during your search
Universities, academic medical centers, and certain nonprofits affiliated with research institutions are exempt from the H-1B lottery. Market access roles at these organizations offer a more predictable path to sponsorship without waiting for annual cap season.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for sponsoring employers
Not every company advertising this role will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for employers open to sponsorship, saving you from investing time in applications at companies that will not support your immigration needs.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Is Associate Director of Market Access considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. This role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation because it requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as health economics, pharmacy, life sciences, or public health. USCIS has a well-established record of approving H-1B petitions for market access and payer strategy roles at pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
How common is H-1B sponsorship for this role in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry?
Sponsorship is fairly common at mid-to-large biopharma companies. Firms like Pfizer, Novartis, Johnson and Johnson, and AstraZeneca are among the top H-1B sponsors nationally, and market access is a core function at these organizations. You can browse currently open sponsored positions on Migrate Mate, filtered by employers with active sponsorship histories.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my H-1B for this position?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree or higher in a field directly related to market access work, such as health economics, outcomes research, pharmacy, public health, or life sciences. An MBA with a healthcare focus is also commonly accepted. A purely general business degree without healthcare-specific coursework may face additional USCIS scrutiny and require a stronger employer justification in the H-1B petition.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change companies in this field?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to begin working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, without waiting for approval. Your new employer files the transfer petition, and you can start immediately if you have been maintaining valid H-1B status. This makes lateral moves between pharmaceutical or biotech companies relatively straightforward compared to starting a new visa from scratch.
Are there visa options other than H-1B for an Associate Director of Market Access role?
Yes. If you have been employed by a multinational company abroad for at least one year in a managerial or specialized knowledge capacity, an L-1 visa may apply and bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. Candidates with a record of national or international recognition in health economics or access strategy may also qualify for an O-1A. Australians working in this field may be eligible for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is significantly less competitive.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Associate Director Market Access jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
