How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Ecommerce Manager
Target companies with established ecommerce operations
Large retailers, DTC brands, and marketplace-driven companies sponsor Ecommerce Managers more consistently than small businesses. These employers have dedicated HR and legal teams experienced with H-1B filings and understand the specialty occupation argument for this role.
Establish the degree requirement clearly in your offer letter
H-1B approval for Ecommerce Manager roles hinges on proving a specific degree is required, not just preferred. Ask your employer to specify a bachelor's degree in marketing, business, or information systems in the job description and offer letter before filing.
Highlight technical skills that strengthen the specialty occupation case
Skills in data analytics, A/B testing platforms, SEO, and paid media attribution make the specialty occupation argument stronger. The more your role involves complex digital systems rather than general management, the clearer the H-1B case becomes for USCIS adjudicators.
File premium processing if your start date is time-sensitive
Standard H-1B processing runs several months. Premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days for an additional fee your employer pays. If you're changing jobs or starting a new role, confirm with your employer upfront whether premium processing is included.
Understand how your H-1B lottery odds affect your timeline
Regular H-1B cap registrations are selected by lottery in March, with approvals effective October 1. If you're not selected, explore cap-exempt employers like universities or nonprofits that may have ecommerce or digital marketing functions needing this expertise.
Build a portfolio that demonstrates cross-functional scope
USCIS scrutinizes whether an Ecommerce Manager role truly requires specialized knowledge. Document revenue impact, platform migrations, and data-driven strategy work. A portfolio showing complex, degree-level decision-making strengthens your employer's specialty occupation argument during adjudication.

Can an Ecommerce Manager get H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, Ecommerce Manager roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship, but the employer must demonstrate the position meets the specialty occupation standard, meaning a specific bachelor's degree in marketing, business, information systems, or a related field is normally required. Roles focused on general operations without technical depth face more scrutiny. USCIS approves these petitions regularly when the job description is specific and the degree requirement is clearly established.
What degree do I need for an Ecommerce Manager visa sponsorship?
Most H-1B filings for Ecommerce Manager roles cite a bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, information systems, or digital marketing. A degree in an unrelated field can still work if you have extensive relevant experience, but it complicates the specialty occupation argument. Some employers accept equivalent experience under the three-for-one rule, where three years of work experience substitutes for one year of college education.
Which types of employers sponsor Ecommerce Managers?
Retailers with large online channels, direct-to-consumer brands, marketplace platforms, and enterprise software companies are the most active sponsors for this role. Companies with dedicated ecommerce divisions, particularly those running Shopify Plus, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, or similar platforms, tend to have established sponsorship infrastructure. Browse Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Ecommerce Manager roles at companies that have sponsored visas before.
Is an Ecommerce Manager role considered a specialty occupation by USCIS?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS has approved Ecommerce Manager petitions where the job description emphasizes data analytics, conversion rate optimization, platform architecture decisions, and cross-functional leadership requiring degree-level knowledge. Roles defined primarily around vendor coordination or content publishing without technical depth are harder to approve. The employer's legal team should frame the position around the most technical and analytical components of the work.
What are common reasons H-1B petitions get denied for Ecommerce Managers?
The most common denial reason is a Request for Evidence challenging whether the role truly requires a specific degree rather than a general bachelor's degree in any field. USCIS may argue that ecommerce management is a general business function. Employers can counter this with a detailed job description, org chart, and evidence that similarly situated companies require the same degree. Working with experienced immigration counsel significantly reduces denial risk.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Ecommerce Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
