Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as an IT Project Manager
Target employers with active H-1B filing histories
Large consulting firms, financial institutions, and technology companies file H-1B petitions for IT Project Managers regularly. Focusing your search on employers with established sponsorship programs significantly reduces the risk of a first-time denial.
Clarify your degree field early in conversations
USCIS requires your degree to align with the role. Computer science, information systems, engineering, and business information technology all support approval. A general business degree alone can create complications, so address this proactively with recruiters.
Highlight certifications alongside your degree
PMP, CAPM, and Agile certifications strengthen your H-1B petition by demonstrating specialized knowledge. USCIS considers the totality of your qualifications, and industry credentials help establish the specialty occupation requirement when degree alignment is borderline.
Pursue H-1B transfers if you're already in the U.S.
If you hold an active H-1B with another employer, a new employer can file a transfer petition without waiting for the lottery. You can start working once the transfer receipt is issued, making mid-career moves significantly faster and less risky.
Understand the lottery timeline before accepting offers
H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you're outside the U.S. without current status, plan your job search and offer acceptance timeline around this annual window to avoid delays.
Negotiate sponsorship terms in writing before signing
Confirm whether the employer covers filing fees, legal costs, and premium processing before accepting an offer. Some companies pass attorney fees to employees after a certain period. Getting this in writing protects you if the company's policy changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does IT Project Manager qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, but USCIS scrutinizes IT Project Manager petitions more heavily than purely technical roles. The key is demonstrating that the position requires a specific bachelor's degree in a field like computer science, information systems, or engineering, rather than a general degree in any field. Petitions that clearly tie the role's technical responsibilities to a specific body of theoretical knowledge have significantly stronger approval outcomes.
What degree do I need to get H-1B sponsorship as an IT Project Manager?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, management information systems, or engineering is the strongest basis for an H-1B visa petition in this role. A general business administration degree can sometimes support approval if the job description emphasizes technical systems management, but it carries more risk. USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence if the degree-to-role connection isn't clearly established in the initial petition.
How do I find IT Project Manager jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists IT Project Manager roles from employers with verified sponsorship histories, so you're not applying to companies that will pull sponsorship offers at the last stage. Filtering by sponsorship type lets you target H-1B transfers, cap-subject positions, or OPT-friendly roles depending on your current status. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late that a company won't sponsor.
Can I switch employers as an IT Project Manager on H-1B?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to transfer to a new employer once you have an approved I-140 or have been in H-1B status for 365 days, as long as the new employer files a transfer petition and the role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For IT Project Managers moving between comparable roles, portability is generally straightforward, and you can start working upon receipt of the transfer petition.
What happens if USCIS issues an RFE on my IT Project Manager H-1B petition?
An RFE for this role most commonly challenges whether the position qualifies as a specialty occupation or whether your degree aligns with the job duties. Your employer's attorney typically responds with a detailed brief citing the O*NET occupational definition, the company's internal job requirements, and supporting documentation about your specific responsibilities. RFEs don't mean denial, but response quality matters considerably, so an experienced immigration attorney is essential.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored IT Project Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
