DESCRIPTION
Amazon Web Services (AWS) powers the cloud infrastructure for hundreds of thousands of businesses worldwide—from startups to Global 500 companies. The AWS Global Events team brings this technology to life through world-class conferences, product launches, and virtual experiences that connect our innovations with customers, partners, and developers across the globe. We're looking for a Senior Technical Director to lead the technical vision and execution behind these high-impact events.
The Senior Technical Director will lead the technical production strategy for our in-person, livestream, and virtual events. This role owns the end-to-end technical direction and vision—from defining audio, lighting, video, and equipment requirements to managing vendor relationships and production budgets. The position requires balancing strategic leadership with hands-on execution: collaborating with internal stakeholders across AWS, overseeing technical teams and external partners, and ensuring every event delivers a seamless, high-quality experience for our customers. This leader will also develop and scale best practices globally by training internal stakeholders and vendors, and creating standardized templates and technical grids for consistent execution across all AWS events. Success requires building scalable systems, strong technical judgment, collaborative leadership, and the ability to scale technical direction across our global events portfolio.
Key job responsibilities
Technical Strategy & Vision
- Define and scale technical production standards globally, including audio, video, lighting, and equipment specifications for in-person, livestream, and virtual event formats
- Develop standardized technical documentation, room configurations, and spatial layouts that ensure consistent, high-quality execution across all AWS event campuses
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and production techniques that enhance attendee experience and operational efficiency
- Create technical drawings, mockups, and renders for event spaces to guide production planning and stakeholder alignment
Team Leadership & Vendor Management
- Partner with and guide technical directors from vendor organizations to ensure alignment with Amazon's production standards, technical requirements, and customer experience expectations
- Educate internal stakeholders on technical production capabilities, feasibility, and cost implications to enable informed decision-making throughout the planning process
- Train vendor technical staff and venue partners on Amazon's best practices and quality standards for consistent execution
- Collaborate with accessibility teams to ensure all events meet inclusive design standards and provide equitable experiences for all attendees
Production Execution & Operations
- Oversee end-to-end technical production for assigned projects, ensuring audio, visual, and lighting systems meet project specifications and quality standards
- Coordinate with livestream and virtual production teams to integrate live and digital event components seamlessly
- Provide technical support during productions, troubleshooting issues and ensuring smooth execution from setup through strike
- Deliver accurate cost estimates for equipment, labor, and setup timelines to support budget planning
Standards & Performance Management
- Establish and enforce best practices for pre-production planning, on-site execution, and post-production debriefs
- Track project metrics, manage budgets, and report on technical production status to leadership and cross-functional partners
- Continuously refine processes and documentation based on project learnings and evolving business needs
- Willingness to travel frequently and work across multiple time zones
A day in the life
Your day might start with a production debrief call with vendor technical directors, reviewing lessons learned from an event and identifying process improvements for upcoming shows. Mid-morning, you'll join a planning session with internal creative and operations teams to walk through technical feasibility and budget implications for an upcoming keynote—translating their vision into practical technical requirements and flagging potential challenges early. You may spend some time drafting, exploring or refining spatial layouts and equipment specs for a new or revised space. Between meetings, you're reviewing vendor quotes, updating technical documentation templates, and responding to questions from stakeholders across time zones. Your week typically includes regular check-ins with your production team, vendor partner syncs, and cross-functional planning meetings that keep dozens of events moving forward simultaneously. Some days you're deep in the details of power distribution and rigging specs; others you're looking into or discussing technical strategies with the production team or training new vendor partners on Amazon's standards. The pace is fast, the scope is global, and no two days look exactly alike.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Technical Director
Emphasize Technical Leadership Experience
Document your experience managing engineering teams, setting technical architecture, and driving product development. Immigration officers value demonstrated leadership of complex technical projects and strategic technology decisions.
Highlight Cross-Functional Collaboration
Technical Directors work closely with product, business, and executive teams. Showcase examples of translating technical concepts to stakeholders and aligning technology strategy with business objectives.
Document System Architecture Decisions
Demonstrate your role in designing scalable systems, choosing technology stacks, and solving complex infrastructure challenges. These technical decisions show the specialized knowledge required for H-1B qualification.
Show Measurable Technical Impact
Quantify improvements in system performance, development velocity, or technical debt reduction under your leadership. Concrete metrics strengthen your case for extraordinary ability or specialty occupation classification.
Address Degree Field Alignment
If your degree isn't in computer science or engineering, highlight relevant technical certifications, advanced training, or the three-for-one experience rule that substitutes work experience for educational requirements.
Consider O-1 for Senior Roles
Technical Directors with industry recognition, published research, or leadership at high-growth companies may qualify for O-1 visas, which bypass H-1B lottery constraints and offer faster processing.

What degree is required for Technical Director H-1B sponsorship?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a closely related technical field is typically required. If your degree is in an unrelated field, you can use the three-for-one rule where three years of relevant technical experience substitutes for one year of education. Advanced degrees or technical certifications can strengthen your application.
Do Technical Directors qualify for O-1 visas?
Yes, Technical Directors with extraordinary achievements may qualify for O-1 visas. This includes industry recognition, published technical research, speaking at major conferences, leading breakthrough projects, or holding senior roles at unicorn companies. O-1 bypasses H-1B lottery constraints and allows faster processing for qualified candidates.
How do employers prove Technical Director roles are specialty occupations?
Employers must demonstrate the position requires specialized technical knowledge typically acquired through a bachelor's degree. They document complex system architecture decisions, advanced programming requirements, team leadership responsibilities, and strategic technology planning that requires formal technical education or equivalent experience.
What are approval rates for Technical Director visa applications?
H-1B approval rates for computer and IT management roles, including Technical Directors, are typically 85-90%. O-1 applications have higher approval rates around 94% but require meeting extraordinary ability criteria. EB-2 and EB-3 green card applications for technical leadership roles generally have strong approval rates when properly documented.
Can Technical Directors change employers on H-1B status?
Yes, but the new employer must file a new H-1B petition. You can start working for the new employer once they file the petition if you haven't reached the six-year H-1B limit. Technical Directors often have strong cases for premium processing to expedite the transfer and minimize employment gaps.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Technical Director jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
