INTRODUCTION

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery seeks a board-certified or board-eligible Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to provide clinical instruction and patient care within the predoctoral and graduate educational programs at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences College of Dentistry. This part-time non-tenure Open Rank Professor position will support the department's educational, clinical, and service missions through direct supervision of dental students and residents while participating in the delivery of comprehensive oral and maxillofacial surgical care.

TEACHING AND CLINICAL EDUCATION:

• Provide direct clinical supervision of D3 and D4 dental students in the predoctoral Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic.
• Teach principles of dentoalveolar surgery, diagnosis, treatment planning, local anesthesia, management of odontogenic infections, exodontia, and management of surgical complications.
• Evaluate student competency and provide formative and summative clinical assessments.
• Promote evidence-based decision making and professionalism in the clinical environment.

GRADUATE EDUCATION:

• Provide clinical supervision and surgical instruction for OMFS residents (PGY-1 through PGY-4).
• Participate in resident education through intraoperative teaching, outpatient clinic supervision, case review, and clinical mentoring.
• Assist faculty with resident evaluation and competency development.
• Participate in graduate didactic conferences and educational activities as appropriate.

PATIENT CARE:

• Provide comprehensive outpatient oral and maxillofacial surgical care in support of the educational mission.
• Supervise patient evaluation, treatment planning, dentoalveolar surgery, implant surgery, management of odontogenic infections, and ambulatory anesthesia procedures consistent with departmental needs.
• Maintain high standards of patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
• Participate, as departmental needs dictate, in adult and pediatric facial trauma call coverage at affiliated Level I Trauma Centers.
• Provide consultation and surgical management of maxillofacial trauma in collaboration with multidisciplinary trauma teams.
• Participate in emergency call schedules as assigned.
• Participate in departmental meetings, faculty development, accreditation activities, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty to advance the educational mission of the College of Dentistry.
• Support recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of students and residents.
• Direct supervision of D3 and D4 dental students in the predoctoral clinic.
• Clinical supervision and mentoring of PGY-1 through PGY-4 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents.
• Oversight of patient care delivered within the educational environment while ensuring compliance with departmental, institutional, CODA, and hospital standards.
• Clinical instruction of predoctoral dental students.
• Resident education and surgical mentoring.
• Direct patient care supporting the educational mission.
• Participation in scholarly activity, quality improvement, or educational research as appropriate.
• Participation in continuing education and faculty development.

HOSPITAL AND TRAUMA RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participate, as departmental needs dictate, in adult and pediatric facial trauma call coverage at affiliated Level I Trauma Centers.
• Provide consultation and surgical management of maxillofacial trauma in collaboration with multidisciplinary trauma teams.
• Participate in emergency call schedules as assigned.

DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE:

• Participate in departmental meetings, faculty development, accreditation activities, and quality improvement initiatives.

SUPERVISORY ROLE:

• Direct supervision of D3 and D4 dental students in the predoctoral clinic.
• Clinical supervision and mentoring of PGY-1 through PGY-4 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents.
• Oversight of patient care delivered within the educational environment while ensuring compliance with departmental, institutional, CODA, and hospital standards.

RESEARCH/TEACHING/PATIENT CARE DUTIES: Clinical instruction of predoctoral dental students.

• Resident education and surgical mentoring.
• Direct patient care supporting the educational mission.
• Participation in scholarly activity, quality improvement, or educational research as appropriate.
• Participation in continuing education and faculty development.

Education: DDS or DMD (or international equivalent). Completion of an ADA-accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency.

LICENSES: Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), or board eligible with certification achieved within the required institutional timeframe. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification. Eligible for unrestricted Tennessee dental licensure or Tennessee teaching license. Hospital credentialing eligibility. Eligibility for moderate/deep sedation permits consistent with Tennessee regulations.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES:

• Experience supervising dental students and residents in an academic environment preferred. Experience in dentoalveolar surgery, ambulatory anesthesia, implant surgery, and management of medically complex patients. Experience in Level 1 trauma center facial trauma management preferred. Strong interpersonal and teaching skills. Commitment to interprofessional education and patient-centered care.
