Target hospitals with existing visa programs
Large hospital systems like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and Johns Hopkins regularly sponsor nurses. They have established immigration departments and understand the H-1B specialty occupation requirements for BSN-level nursing positions.
Emphasize specialized OR certifications
Highlight certifications like CNOR (Certified periOperative Registered Nurse) or CRNFA (Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant). These demonstrate the specialized knowledge that strengthens your case for meeting H-1B specialty occupation standards.
Focus on BSN degree requirement
Many OR nurse positions specifically require a BSN rather than an ADN or diploma. This educational requirement helps establish the role as a specialty occupation eligible for H-1B sponsorship under USCIS guidelines.
Consider rural and underserved areas
Rural hospitals often face nursing shortages and may be more willing to sponsor visas. Some qualify for J-1 visa waiver programs, which can provide alternative pathways to permanent residency.
Document your surgical specialization
OR nurses work across multiple surgical specialties. Emphasize experience in cardiac, neurosurgery, orthopedics, or other specialized areas that require advanced technical knowledge beyond general nursing practice to strengthen your petition.
Prepare for NCLEX-RN licensing requirements
You'll need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and meet state licensing requirements before starting work. Factor this timeline into your visa application process, as employers typically require active nursing licensure.

Find Registered Nurse Operating Room JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do OR nurse positions qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, OR nurse positions typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship when they require a BSN degree. The specialized surgical knowledge, sterile technique expertise, and critical patient monitoring skills required in operating rooms generally meet USCIS specialty occupation standards. However, positions requiring only an ADN or nursing diploma may face challenges.
What degree do I need for visa sponsorship as an OR nurse?
Most visa-eligible OR nurse positions require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program. Some employers may accept an ADN plus significant OR experience, but BSN requirements strengthen the H-1B petition. You'll also need to pass NCLEX-RN and obtain state nursing licensure before employment.
Which hospitals are most likely to sponsor OR nurses?
Large academic medical centers and hospital systems like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and major university hospitals frequently sponsor nurses. These institutions have dedicated immigration departments and established H-1B programs. Rural hospitals facing nursing shortages may also consider sponsorship, especially through J-1 waiver programs.
How do OR nurse H-1B approval rates compare to other specialties?
OR nurse H-1B petitions generally have favorable approval rates when the position requires a BSN and emphasizes specialized surgical knowledge. The key is demonstrating that the role requires nursing expertise beyond basic patient care, such as advanced surgical instrumentation, complex patient monitoring, and specialized OR protocols.
Can travel nurses get visa sponsorship for OR positions?
Travel nursing agencies rarely sponsor visas due to the temporary nature of assignments and complex logistics of maintaining H-1B status across multiple locations. However, some permanent staff OR positions at hospitals may consider candidates currently on travel assignments if they're willing to transition to direct employment.
How to find Registered Nurse Operating Room jobs with visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search specifically for Registered Nurse Operating Room positions with visa sponsorship. Focus on hospitals, surgical centers, and healthcare networks that commonly sponsor H-1B, TN, or EB-3 visas for specialized nursing roles. Filter results by employers known to hire international perioperative nurses and offer comprehensive visa support throughout the application process.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Registered Nurse Operating Room jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
