Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Power Platform Developer
Certify your Microsoft credentials before applying
PL-400 and PL-100 certifications signal specialized expertise to both employers and USCIS. They strengthen the specialty occupation argument in your H-1B petition by demonstrating a level of technical knowledge beyond a generalist developer.
Target employers with an active H-1B filing history
Large enterprises in financial services, healthcare systems, and consulting firms file H-1B petitions for Power Platform roles regularly. Prioritizing companies with a documented sponsorship track record reduces the risk of an offer disappearing after the lottery.
Frame your degree field carefully in petitions
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree and the role. A computer science, information systems, or software engineering degree maps cleanly. Business or management degrees require additional documentation tying your coursework to platform development work.
Use OPT STEM extension time strategically
Computer science and information systems degrees typically qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you three H-1B lottery attempts. Use that window to build enterprise Power Platform experience that supports a stronger petition when the time comes.
Document your platform specialization in detail
Generic developer job descriptions invite USCIS scrutiny. Ensure your employer letter specifies Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, or Power BI work explicitly. Vague titles like application developer without platform context weaken the specialty occupation argument significantly.
Browse sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Power Platform Developer roles by employers actively willing to sponsor visas, saving significant research time. Applying through a curated list means every opportunity you see has already been vetted for sponsorship willingness before you invest effort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Power Platform Developer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, Power Platform Developer roles generally qualify as a specialty occupation when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, or a related technical field. The key is that the job description must specify platform-specific technical requirements, not just general IT skills. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required can face USCIS challenges, so the offer letter wording matters.
What degree do I need to get H-1B sponsorship as a Power Platform Developer?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a closely related field is the standard requirement. Degrees in business or management information systems can qualify if coursework included substantial technical components. If your degree field doesn't map directly, three years of specialized work experience can substitute for each missing year of education under USCIS equivalency rules.
Which visa types are available to Power Platform Developers beyond the H-1B?
Australian citizens can apply for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a much faster process. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa category for computer systems analysts. Candidates with exceptional portfolios, publications, or industry recognition may qualify for the O-1A visa, which bypasses the H-1B visa cap entirely and doesn't require employer sponsorship at the petition stage.
How can I find Power Platform Developer jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is specifically built for this search. It lists Power Platform Developer roles from employers who are actively open to sponsoring work visas, so you're not guessing which companies will engage. General job boards mix sponsored and non-sponsored roles without filtering, which wastes time during the critical window when you're managing OPT or a cap-gap situation.
Does holding Microsoft certifications improve my H-1B approval chances?
Certifications like PL-400 (Power Platform Developer Associate) don't directly determine H-1B approval, but they strengthen the specialty occupation argument by demonstrating specialized, platform-specific expertise. USCIS adjudicators look for evidence that the role requires theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge. Certifications, combined with a strong job description and matching degree, build a more defensible petition overall.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Power Platform Developer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
