Principal Solutions Architect
Position Description
DaVita’s Principal Solutions Architects are responsible for defining the architecture of IT solutions. This role serves as a senior technical leader who translates business needs into secure, scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective solution designs. Principal Solutions Architects partner across Enterprise Architecture, Product, Engineering, DevOps, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Data, and Operations teams to evaluate build-versus-buy options, shape solution direction, reduce technology redundancy, and guide delivery teams toward successful implementation.
This role is intended for an architect with deep pre-existing expertise in one or more of these strategic enterprise platforms: Microsoft 365, Salesforce, ServiceNow and Epic Systems. The successful candidate will use this platform expertise to accelerate solution design, strengthen governance, improve integration patterns, and help DaVita make durable technology decisions aligned to enterprise standards and business value.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all-inclusive.
- Define solution architecture for complex enterprise initiatives, including packaged applications, SaaS platforms, custom applications, integrations, cloud services, data flows, identity, security, and operational support models.
- Serve as a platform architecture expert for Microsoft 365, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and/or Epic Systems helping teams apply platform capabilities appropriately while avoiding unnecessary customization, duplication, or long-term support burden.
- Identify practical AI opportunities across solution architecture, including where generative AI, automation, intelligent search, knowledge management, decision support, or agentic workflows could improve teammate productivity, experience, quality, or operational efficiency.
- Partner with business, product, engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity, privacy, legal, and operations stakeholders to translate business objectives into clear solution recommendations, estimates, and implementation guidance.
- Lead architecture assessments and design reviews that evaluate solution fit, scalability, resiliency, complexity, cost, and alignment with enterprise standards and roadmaps.
- Develop architecture blueprints, system context diagrams, deployment views, integration patterns, and executive-ready solution summaries that support informed investment and governance decisions.
- Guide build-vs-buy evaluations for SaaS, packaged, and custom-built solutions, including assessment of vendor capabilities, platform overlap, implementation complexity, extensibility, support model, and total cost of ownership.
- Drive modernization by promoting composable architectures, reusable integration patterns, identity and access standards, cloud-ready designs, and responsible use of AI-enabled capabilities where appropriate.
- Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture to ensure solution designs align with target architecture, technology standards, portfolio direction, security expectations, and broader modernization goals.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to architects, engineers, product teams, and delivery partners, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and adherence to architecture principles.
- Identify technical risks, architectural tradeoffs, dependencies, and assumptions early in the project lifecycle and communicate them clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support delivery teams throughout the project lifecycle by clarifying architecture intent, assisting with design decisions, reviewing implementation approaches, and helping resolve architecture-related issues.
- Stay current with emerging platform capabilities, vendor roadmaps, healthcare technology trends, cybersecurity expectations, and architecture best practices to continuously improve DaVita’s solution architecture capability.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep architecture experience with at least one strategic enterprise platform: Microsoft 365, Salesforce, ServiceNow, and/or Epic Systems.
- Strong understanding of enterprise architecture principles, solution design patterns, integration architecture, identity and access management, data protection, security-by-design, and operational support considerations.
- Experience evaluating SaaS and packaged applications, including platform capabilities, configuration versus customization tradeoffs, integration approaches, vendor fit, and long-term maintainability.
- Working knowledge of cloud-native architecture concepts and modern delivery practices, including CI/CD, infrastructure automation, observability, resiliency, and scalable application design.
- Experience establishing reusable AI solution patterns and reference architectures.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance strategic direction, business value, delivery practicality, user experience, security, compliance, and cost.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, including the ability to collaborate with executives, business leaders, product owners, engineers, cybersecurity, infrastructure, vendors, and support teams.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor technical teammates, lead design discussions, facilitate alignment across groups, and promote consistent architecture practices.
- Familiarity with healthcare technology, regulated environments, privacy, compliance, PHI/PII handling, HIPAA considerations, and secure integration patterns is preferred.

Emphasize your technical degree on every application
USCIS requires a direct connection between your degree and the role. A computer science, software engineering, or information systems degree maps cleanly to Principal Solutions Engineer, strengthening the specialty occupation case your employer will need to make.
Target large tech and enterprise software employers first
Companies like Salesforce, AWS, and Oracle have established H-1B sponsorship pipelines and dedicated immigration teams. Larger employers process more petitions annually, which means faster internal approval cycles and more experienced legal support for your case.
Position yourself as a solutions architect, not just a salesperson
USCIS scrutinizes roles that blend technical and sales functions. Framing your experience around technical design, systems integration, and architecture demonstrates the specialized knowledge required for specialty occupation classification and reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Document your domain expertise with measurable outcomes
Complex enterprise deployments, cloud migrations, or platform integrations you've led strengthen both your visa petition and your candidacy. Quantified results, such as reduced implementation time or enterprise clients onboarded, give attorneys concrete evidence to build your H-1B case around.
Ask about sponsorship policy in the first recruiter conversation
Many employers sponsor but don't advertise it openly. Asking directly in the initial recruiter call saves weeks of back-and-forth. Frame it as a logistics question, not a complication, and gauge whether the company has sponsored technical roles at the principal level before.
Browse Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring this role
Migrate Mate surfaces jobs specifically filtered for visa sponsorship availability. Searching by role and seniority level helps you focus on employers already willing to sponsor, rather than applying broadly and discovering sponsorship blockers late in the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Principal Solutions Engineer role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. Principal Solutions Engineer qualifies as a specialty occupation because it normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field such as computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering. USCIS has consistently approved H-1B visa petitions for solutions engineering roles, particularly at senior and principal levels where deep technical expertise is a documented job requirement.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a Principal Solutions Engineer?
A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a closely related technical field is the standard requirement. Degrees in business or general management are unlikely to satisfy the specialty occupation standard on their own. If your degree is in a adjacent field, your attorney may supplement with advanced certifications or a body of progressive technical experience to strengthen the petition.
Will employers sponsor a Principal Solutions Engineer for an H-1B if the role includes a sales component?
This is a common concern. USCIS has issued Requests for Evidence for solutions engineering roles that appear heavily sales-focused. The strongest petitions document the technical architecture, systems design, and integration work central to the role. If your job description emphasizes customer-facing revenue activity over technical depth, ask your employer's immigration attorney to review the language before filing.
Is O-1A visa sponsorship realistic for a Principal Solutions Engineer?
It's possible if you have documented evidence of extraordinary ability, such as published technical work, industry awards, speaking engagements at major conferences, or a record of leading unusually complex deployments. The O-1 visaA doesn't have a lottery, which makes it attractive for candidates who didn't receive an H-1B selection. Your employer still acts as the petitioner, so their willingness to sponsor is required. Migrate Mate lists employers open to O-1 visa sponsorship.
What happens if I miss the H-1B lottery as a Principal Solutions Engineer?
You have several options. If your employer qualifies as a higher education institution or affiliated nonprofit, they may be cap-exempt and can file outside the lottery. Alternatively, you can explore L-1B intracompany transfer if you've worked for the same employer abroad for at least one year. TN visa status is available if you're Canadian or Mexican. O-1A is another path if your credentials support it. Each option has different eligibility requirements and timelines.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Principal Solutions Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
