Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Prosthetics Technician
Target specialized prosthetics companies over general healthcare facilities
Companies like Ottobock, Össur, and Hanger Clinic regularly sponsor visas because they need specialized technical skills that are harder to find domestically than general healthcare workers.
Emphasize CAD/CAM software proficiency and digital fabrication experience
Modern prosthetics increasingly rely on 3D scanning, computer-aided design, and digital manufacturing. These technical skills strengthen your specialty occupation case for H-1B eligibility.
Consider O-1 if you have advanced certifications or research experience
Prosthetics technicians with ABC certification, published research, or specialized training in myoelectric limbs may qualify for O-1 extraordinary ability visas with faster processing.
Look for positions at VA medical centers and military contractors
Veterans Affairs facilities and defense contractors like Northrop Grumman often have government contracts requiring specialized prosthetics work, making visa sponsorship more justified.
Highlight biomechanics knowledge and engineering coursework in applications
Prosthetics involves complex biomechanical engineering. Degrees in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or formal prosthetics programs strengthen your specialty occupation argument significantly.
Apply during Q1-Q2 when healthcare facilities plan staffing budgets
Many healthcare employers finalize visa sponsorship budgets early in the fiscal year. January through June typically offers better timing for sponsorship discussions.

Find Prosthetics Technician JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do prosthetics technicians qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, if the position requires specialized knowledge and at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Roles involving CAD design, biomechanical analysis, or advanced fitting techniques typically qualify. Associate degrees plus extensive experience may also meet requirements through the 3-for-1 experience rule.
What degree requirements do employers expect for visa sponsorship?
Most sponsored positions prefer associate or bachelor's degrees in prosthetics/orthotics, biomedical engineering, or mechanical engineering. Some employers accept related degrees with specialized training certificates from organizations like ABC (American Board for Certification) or hands-on prosthetics fabrication experience.
Which types of employers sponsor visas for prosthetics technicians?
Specialized prosthetics companies (Ottobock, Hanger Clinic), medical device manufacturers, VA medical centers, university research hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities most commonly sponsor visas. Large healthcare systems occasionally sponsor for specialized roles requiring advanced technical skills.
How competitive is H-1B approval for prosthetics technician roles?
Approval rates are generally favorable because the role requires specialized technical knowledge that's hard to find domestically. Positions emphasizing engineering aspects, digital fabrication, or research components have stronger cases than basic assembly work. O-1 may be viable for highly experienced technicians.
Can prosthetics technicians change employers on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability rules. You can start working for a new employer once they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for approval. The new position must still meet specialty occupation requirements and the employer must obtain a new Labor Condition Application.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Prosthetics Technician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
