Do pulmonary physicians qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, pulmonary medicine is a recognized medical specialty that qualifies for H-1B sponsorship. Your medical degree, residency training, and board certification in pulmonary disease meet the specialty occupation requirements. Hospitals routinely sponsor physicians in this field.
What degree requirements apply for pulmonary physician visa applications?
You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent foreign medical degree, plus completion of an accredited pulmonary disease fellowship program. USCIS also requires current medical licensure and board certification or eligibility in pulmonary medicine for most visa categories.
Which visa types work best for pulmonary physicians?
H-1B is most common for hospital employment. O-1 works for physicians with extraordinary achievements in research or clinical care. EB-2 provides permanent residency for advanced degree holders. J-1 waiver positions offer direct green card paths in underserved areas.
Do foreign medical graduates face additional visa challenges?
Foreign medical graduates must complete ECFMG certification and pass USMLE exams before visa sponsorship. However, pulmonary medicine has strong demand, and employers actively recruit international physicians. Many major medical centers have established pathways for foreign graduates.
How does critical care training affect visa applications?
Dual board certification in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine strengthens your specialty occupation case. ICU experience is highly valued by employers and demonstrates advanced expertise that justifies visa sponsorship costs to USCIS.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Pulmonary Physician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
