Emphasize your degree's connection to behavior analysis
RBT roles qualify for H-1B when the position requires specialized knowledge in psychology, special education, or applied behavior analysis. Highlight coursework in developmental psychology, learning theory, or autism spectrum disorders.
Target employers with established ABA programs
Larger behavioral health organizations and hospital systems are more likely to sponsor visas. They understand the specialty occupation requirements and have experience navigating the H-1B process for clinical roles.
Address state licensing requirements early
Many states require RBT certification through the BACB. Research certification requirements in your target state and begin the process early, as employers need assurance you can legally work upon arrival.
Highlight experience with evidence-based interventions
Document your training in ABA techniques, data collection, and behavioral intervention plans. Employers need to justify why the role requires specialized knowledge beyond basic caregiving or educational support.
Research the employer's BCBA supervision structure
RBTs work under Board Certified Behavior Analysts. Employers with strong BCBA teams are more likely to understand visa requirements and support the specialty occupation case for your petition.

Find Registered Behavior Technician JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need a specific degree to get visa sponsorship as an RBT?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in psychology, special education, or a related behavioral science field. Some accept degrees in education or human services, but the key is demonstrating how your coursework relates to applied behavior analysis. A few employers may accept associate degrees with extensive ABA training, but H-1B sponsorship becomes much harder without a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Can RBT positions qualify for H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
Yes, when the employer can demonstrate the role requires specialized knowledge in behavioral analysis or psychology. Success depends on the job description emphasizing data analysis, behavior modification techniques, and implementation of evidence-based interventions. Basic supervision or caregiving duties don't qualify, so the role must be clearly clinical and analytical in nature.
What states offer the best opportunities for sponsored RBT positions?
California, Texas, Florida, and New York have the most ABA providers and established visa sponsorship programs. These states also have streamlined RBT certification processes. Avoid states with restrictive licensing requirements that could delay your ability to start work, as H-1B timing is critical for maintaining legal status.
How long does RBT certification take for international candidates?
The BACB requires 40 hours of training plus a competency assessment, typically completed in 2-3 months. International candidates should complete this before applying for jobs, as employers need assurance you can obtain state certification quickly. Some states have additional requirements, so research your target location's specific process early.
Can I work as an RBT on OPT after graduation?
Yes, if your degree is in psychology, special education, or a related field that connects to behavioral analysis. The role must be directly related to your major. STEM OPT extension is available for some psychology programs, giving you up to 36 months to find H-1B sponsorship while gaining valuable U.S. experience.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Registered Behavior Technician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
How to find Registered Behavior Technician jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Registered Behavior Technician jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international candidates with sponsoring employers.
