Lead with revenue impact, not job duties
Visa sponsors in sales need to justify the hire to USCIS. Quantify your results, pipeline generated, deals closed, accounts grown. Numbers make the specialty occupation case far stronger than a list of responsibilities.
Clarify your degree alignment upfront
H-1B visa eligibility in sales hinges on degree relevance. Business, marketing, economics, and international relations typically qualify. If your degree is in an unrelated field, be prepared to show how coursework applies directly to the role.
Target enterprise and B2B-focused employers
Enterprise software, SaaS, financial services, and consulting firms sponsor far more frequently than small businesses or consumer-facing companies. These employers have established immigration processes and are accustomed to filing petitions for sales hires.
Understand that not all sales titles qualify equally
Account executive and business development manager roles at complex product companies qualify more reliably than general sales rep positions. The more technical or strategic the sale, the stronger the specialty occupation argument for USCIS purposes.
Ask about sponsorship policy during the first recruiter call
Many sales employers sponsor selectively based on role seniority or team budget. Raising it early saves weeks of time. Frame it factually: confirm whether the company has sponsored before and whether this role is eligible.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified sponsors
Not every employer who posts a sales role will sponsor a visa. Migrate Mate surfaces jobs from companies with confirmed sponsorship history, so you spend your time on applications that can actually move forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can sales and business development roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but the role needs to meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard, meaning a bachelor's degree in a specific field must be a normal requirement for the position. Business development manager, enterprise account executive, and strategic partnerships roles at complex product or services companies typically qualify. Generic sales rep positions with no degree requirement are harder to support.
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship in a sales role?
A bachelor's degree in business administration, marketing, economics, finance, or a closely related field is the most defensible basis. International relations or communications can work for roles with a global or strategic focus. The key is that your degree field must logically connect to the specific duties of the role, USCIS scrutinizes this connection in sales petitions more than in technical fields.
How likely is H-1B approval for a business development position?
Approval rates for sales and business development roles are lower than for engineering or IT positions because specialty occupation eligibility is less straightforward to establish. Employers with experienced immigration counsel and strong job descriptions win more approvals. Seniority helps, director-level and strategic roles are approved at higher rates than entry-level sales positions.
Are there visa options besides the H-1B for sales professionals?
Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and far less competition. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under the TN visa for certain business roles. If you have demonstrated exceptional achievement, major accounts, industry recognition, or significant business impact, the O-1A is worth exploring with an immigration attorney. Each path has different requirements and timelines.
Where can I find sales jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards mix sponsored and non-sponsored listings with no way to filter reliably. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on roles from employers with verified sponsorship history, which makes it significantly faster to identify companies worth applying to. You can browse sales and business development roles filtered by visa type directly on the platform.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Sales And Business Development jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
