Overview
Job Description: We don’t simply hire employees. We invest in them. When you work at Chatham, we empower you — offering professional development opportunities to help you grow in your career, no matter if you've been here for five months or 15 years. Chatham has worked hard to create a distinct work environment that values people, teamwork, integrity, and client service. You will have immediate opportunities to partner with talented subject matter experts, work on complex projects, and contribute to the value Chatham delivers every day. We are seeking a Security Engineering Manager to lead and evolve our security engineering function within a growing financial risk and advisory SaaS business. This role is ideal for an engineering-first leader who thrives in a hands-on environment and is motivated to build, scale, and mature security capabilities in a cloud-native platform. You will lead a small but growing team, while remaining deeply technical—designing and implementing security controls across cloud infrastructure, applications, and CI/CD pipelines. You will play a critical role in strengthening our security posture, ensuring compliance with SOC 2 requirements, and enabling engineering teams to build securely at scale.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and grow the Security Engineering function, starting as a player-coach and scaling the team over time
- Design, build, and implement security controls across Azure-based cloud infrastructure, containerized environments, and .NET applications
- Establish and mature cloud security and application security practices, including secure architecture patterns and threat modeling
- Secure the software development lifecycle (SDLC) by integrating security into CI/CD pipelines and developer workflows
- Own and manage third-party penetration testing, including vendor coordination, scope definition, and remediation tracking
- Develop and deliver secure coding training and guidance to engineering teams, driving adoption of best practices
- Build and maintain auditable security controls aligned with SOC 2 requirements, partner closely with internal stakeholders and external auditors
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, DevOps, and Compliance to embed security into the development and delivery process
- Evaluate, implement, and operate security tooling, with a focus on automation and scalability (shifting from building to optimizing over time)
- Implement and manage cloud security scanning and posture management, including continuous monitoring for misconfigurations, vulnerabilities, and drift across Azure environments
- Identify and address emerging risks related to AI/LLM usage, including vulnerability management, secure integration practices, and guidance for engineering teams adopting AI capabilities
- Remain hands-on—able to dive into technical challenges, review architecture, and contribute directly when needed
What Success Looks Like (First 12 Months)
- Strengthened and matured cloud and application security practices across the organization
- Implemented robust policy scanning and vulnerability management practices
- Implemented effective security controls within CI/CD pipelines and development workflows
- Established and maintained robust, auditable controls aligned to SOC 2 requirements
What You Bring
- 7+ years of experience in security engineering, with a strong foundation in software or cloud engineering
- Proven experience leading or mentoring engineers, with a desire to build and scale a team
- Deep hands-on expertise in cloud security (Azure required; AWS familiarity preferred)
- Experience securing modern application stacks, including .NET applications and containerized environments
- Strong understanding of application security principles, including secure coding practices, threat modeling, and common vulnerabilities (OWASP Top 10)
- Experience integrating security into CI/CD pipelines and developer tooling
- Familiarity with SOC 2 controls, including designing and implementing auditable technical controls and working with auditors
- Experience managing or working with third-party penetration testing vendors
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to operate both strategically and tactically
- Experience with security tooling such as SAST, DAST, container scanning, and cloud security posture management (CSPM)
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, particularly in working with engineering teams
For Denver based candidates, the compensation range for the position is expected to be between $155,000 and $180,000 annually. Total compensation, including base pay, discretionary individual bonus and company bonus, may be higher than range listed, depending on applicant’s skills, qualifications, and experience. Benefits include health insurance, life and disability insurance, 401k, EAP, paid holidays and paid time off.

Target employers with established security teams
Large tech companies, banks, and cloud providers maintain dedicated security organizations and sponsor H-1B visas regularly. Smaller startups may lack the legal infrastructure to sponsor, so prioritize companies with 500 or more employees.
Highlight both technical depth and leadership scope
Consular officers and USCIS evaluate whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Demonstrating that you manage security architects and own risk strategy strengthens the specialty occupation argument in your H-1B petition.
Confirm your degree aligns with the role
Most Security Engineering Manager petitions require a degree in computer science, information security, or a closely related field. A general business or unrelated degree will require additional documentation to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation criteria.
Ask about green card sponsorship early
Security leadership roles often qualify for EB-2 sponsorship through PERM labor certification. Raising this in the offer stage helps you understand the employer's timeline and whether they have a structured immigration program for senior hires.
Prepare for O-1A as an H-1B alternative
If you missed the H-1B lottery, documented achievements like published research, speaking at security conferences, or leading incident response at scale can support an O-1A petition, which has no annual cap or lottery.
Understand the LCA before your offer letter
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before your H-1B petition. The LCA specifies your worksite location, so remote arrangements or office changes mid-employment may require an amended filing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Security Engineering Manager roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes, Security Engineering Manager positions consistently qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B visa requirements. USCIS looks for a direct relationship between the degree field and the job duties. Roles overseeing security architecture, threat modeling, or compliance programs in regulated industries have a strong track record of approval, particularly when the job description specifies a degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or information systems as a requirement rather than a preference.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor this role?
Financial institutions, cloud infrastructure companies, defense contractors, and large enterprise tech firms are the most consistent sponsors for Security Engineering Manager positions. These organizations operate in regulated environments where security leadership is a compliance necessity, not discretionary. Browse Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Security Engineering Manager roles at companies with active H-1B sponsorship histories, which significantly narrows your search to realistic opportunities.
Can I qualify without a computer science degree?
Possibly, but it requires more documentation. USCIS accepts three years of specialized work experience as a substitute for one year of formal education. If your degree is in a related field like electrical engineering or mathematics, a strong record of progressive security experience can bridge the gap. A degree in an unrelated field like marketing or history makes the specialty occupation argument considerably harder and may require an expert opinion letter from a credentialed evaluator.
How does the H-1B lottery affect hiring timelines for this role?
The H-1B cap lottery runs once per year, with registrations typically opening in March for an October 1 start date. If you're not selected, you cannot begin cap-subject H-1B employment until the following fiscal year. Employers hiring for senior security leadership often use this reality to plan hiring a full year ahead. Cap-exempt employers, including universities and nonprofit research institutions, can file year-round without lottery constraints.
Does this role support a green card through EB-1 or EB-2?
Security Engineering Managers most commonly pursue green cards through EB-2 with PERM labor certification, which requires the employer to demonstrate no qualified U.S. worker is available. Candidates with published security research, patents, or recognized leadership in the cybersecurity field may qualify for EB-1A extraordinary ability or EB-2 National Interest Waiver, both of which bypass PERM entirely. EB-1 is particularly worth exploring if you've presented at major security conferences or led industry-wide initiatives.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Security Engineering Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
