How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Security Product Manager
Target cybersecurity-focused employers
Companies like Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, and Microsoft consistently file H-1B petitions for Security PMs. Firms with dedicated security product lines are far more likely to sponsor than generalist employers hiring their first security hire.
Frame your degree as directly relevant
USCIS requires a degree in a field directly related to the role. Computer science, information security, or software engineering degrees map cleanly. Business degrees alone may raise a specialty occupation challenge without strong technical coursework to support them.
Demonstrate cross-functional security ownership
Sponsoring employers want evidence you've driven security roadmaps, not just supported engineering teams. Highlight threat modeling, compliance feature delivery, or zero-trust initiatives you owned end-to-end to distinguish yourself from general product managers.
Ask about premium processing upfront
Premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days. For Security PM roles where start dates are tied to product cycles or security incidents, many employers approve it. Raise this during offer negotiation, not after signing.
Browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Not every company advertising a Security PM role will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate filters job listings to employers actively open to sponsorship, saving you from applying to roles that will stall at the offer stage over immigration status.

Is Security Product Manager considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Security Product Manager roles qualify as specialty occupations because they require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, typically in information security, computer science, or software engineering. USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for this title consistently, though adjudicators may scrutinize petitions where the degree field is only loosely connected to the security domain. A strong job description tying the role's daily responsibilities to specific technical disciplines strengthens the petition.
What degree do I need for a Security PM role to get H-1B sponsorship?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information security, cybersecurity, software engineering, or a closely related technical field. A general business or management degree may be insufficient on its own unless it's paired with substantial coursework or certifications in security. USCIS evaluates whether the degree requirement is a genuine standard for the occupation, so employers typically specify the field in the job description and the I-129 petition.
Do security certifications like CISSP or CISM help with H-1B approval for this role?
Certifications like CISSP, CISM, or CompTIA Security+ don't substitute for a bachelor's degree in H-1B petitions, but they strengthen the overall profile. They help demonstrate that the role genuinely requires specialized security knowledge, which supports the specialty occupation argument. If your degree is in a tangentially related field, certifications combined with relevant work experience can help close the gap in the petition narrative.
Which types of companies sponsor Security Product Managers most often?
Enterprise cybersecurity vendors, cloud infrastructure companies, and large financial institutions with internal security product teams file the most H-1B petitions for Security PM roles. Defense contractors and government technology firms also sponsor, though they often require or prefer U.S. citizenship for clearance-dependent positions. To find employers who are actively open to sponsoring international candidates in this role, browse listings on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for sponsorship-friendly employers.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B as a Security Product Manager?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to change employers while your new employer's H-1B transfer petition is pending, as long as your previous petition was approved and you've been maintaining valid status. The new employer files a fresh I-129 petition, and you can typically start the new role once USCIS receives it. Security PM roles at new employers don't require re-proving specialty occupation from scratch, but the new petition still goes through standard USCIS review.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Security Product Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
