Emphasize degree requirements in job descriptions
Construction project management roles must explicitly require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture to qualify for H-1B sponsorship under specialty occupation criteria.
Document complex project management duties
Highlight responsibilities like coordinating multiple trades, managing project budgets, ensuring building code compliance, and overseeing safety protocols to demonstrate the specialized knowledge required for the position.
Target mid-size to large construction firms
Companies with 25+ employees and annual revenues over $25 million are more likely to have established visa sponsorship processes and can better justify the costs and administrative requirements.
Consider commercial over residential projects
Commercial construction firms often have more complex projects requiring specialized oversight, making it easier to demonstrate the need for degree-level expertise in H-1B petitions and Labor Condition Applications.
Highlight relevant certifications alongside your degree
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, OSHA training, or LEED credentials can strengthen your case by showing specialized knowledge beyond what a general bachelor's degree provides.
Research prevailing wage classifications carefully
Construction project manager wages vary significantly by region and project type. Ensure the employer's wage offer meets or exceeds the Department of Labor's prevailing wage determination for your specific location.

Find Construction Project Manager JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do construction project managers qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, construction project managers can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the role requires a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or related field. The position must involve specialized duties like coordinating complex building systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing technical project specifications that require degree-level expertise.
What degree requirements do employers typically set for sponsored positions?
Most employers sponsoring construction project managers require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or closely related engineering field. Some accept business degrees with substantial construction experience, but engineering or construction-specific degrees provide stronger H-1B petition support since they directly relate to the technical aspects of the role.
How competitive are H-1B approvals for construction project management roles?
Construction project manager H-1B petitions have moderate approval rates when properly documented. The key challenge is demonstrating that the specific position requires specialized knowledge beyond general project management. Success rates improve when the role involves complex commercial projects, regulatory compliance, or coordination of multiple technical trades requiring degree-level expertise.
Can construction project managers get green cards through their employers?
Yes, construction project managers can pursue employment-based green cards, typically through the EB-2 or EB-3 categories. EB-2 requires an advanced degree or bachelor's plus five years of progressive experience. The PERM labor certification process can take 1-2 years, with additional time for the I-140 petition and adjustment of status depending on your country of birth.
How to find Construction Project Manager jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Construction Project Manager positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus your search on large construction firms, infrastructure companies, and engineering consultancies that commonly sponsor H-1B, EB-2, or EB-3 visas for project management roles. These employers typically need experienced managers for commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects.
What alternatives exist if H-1B sponsorship isn't available?
Construction project managers may qualify for TN status if they're Canadian or Mexican citizens, L-1B transfers if working for multinational construction firms, or O-1 visas for those with extraordinary ability in architecture or engineering. E-2 investor visas are also possible for those starting construction consulting businesses with substantial investment.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Construction Project Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
