Target product companies over staffing firms
Product-based tech companies sponsor H-1B visas far more reliably than staffing agencies. They have established immigration programs, retained counsel, and budget allocated for petitions. Focus your search on companies with dedicated engineering organizations.
Emphasize test automation expertise in your resume
Employers justify H-1B specialty occupation status more easily when your resume reflects systems-level skills: building frameworks, CI/CD integration, and performance testing. Generic QA language weakens the petition. Lead with technical engineering contributions.
Clarify your visa timeline early in conversations
Mentioning your visa status before the offer stage lets employers assess sponsorship feasibility without surprises. If you hold OPT or STEM OPT, specify the remaining duration clearly so hiring managers can align timelines with their H-1B filing calendar.
Understand the H-1B cap and lottery timing
H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you need cap-subject sponsorship, start your job search at least six months early. Cap-exempt employers like universities and nonprofits can file year-round with faster processing.
Ask specifically about prior SDET sponsorship history
Some employers treat Software Engineer in Test roles differently from software engineering when assessing sponsorship willingness. Ask whether the company has sponsored H-1B visas for this specific title before, not just for engineering roles broadly.
Use Migrate Mate to find pre-vetted sponsoring employers
Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers with verified H-1B sponsorship history for engineering positions. Filtering by visa sponsorship saves time and connects you directly with companies that have already committed to sponsoring international candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Software Engineer in Test role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. SDET roles qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B visa requirements because they typically require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. USCIS has consistently approved H-1B petitions for this title when the job description reflects engineering-level complexity, such as framework design, automation architecture, and systems integration, rather than manual testing alone.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor an H-1B for this role?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a closely related technical field. A degree in an unrelated discipline weakens the specialty occupation argument. If your degree is in a adjacent field like electrical engineering or mathematics, strong coursework or a master's in CS can compensate. Three years of relevant work experience can substitute for one year of formal education if you lack a full four-year degree.
How do H-1B approval rates look for SDET roles specifically?
USCIS approves the majority of H-1B petitions for software engineering titles, including SDET and Quality Engineer variants, when the job description clearly establishes degree requirements and technical complexity. Denials most often occur when petition language emphasizes manual or functional testing without demonstrating engineering-level skill requirements. A well-drafted job description and strong supporting documentation from the employer significantly improves outcomes.
Can I work as a Senior SDET on OPT while waiting for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. If you have F-1 status with active OPT or STEM OPT, you can work legally while your employer files an H-1B petition. STEM OPT provides up to 24 additional months of work authorization, giving you roughly three years total on F-1 post-graduation. That window covers two full H-1B lottery cycles. Confirm your STEM OPT employer reporting requirements are met to avoid gaps in authorization.
Where can I find Senior Software Engineer in Test jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Senior SDET and quality engineering roles specifically from employers with H-1B sponsorship history. Rather than filtering through thousands of generic job postings, Migrate Mate focuses on opportunities where international candidates are genuinely welcome, saving significant time for people navigating OPT deadlines or H-1B lottery timelines.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Senior Software Engineer In Test jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
