Target employers on active federal or infrastructure projects
Large-scale federal contractors and infrastructure firms are more likely to sponsor visas because project timelines depend on filling supervisory roles. Search Migrate Mate to find employers with a track record of sponsoring site supervisors specifically.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the role
H-1B sponsorship for site supervisors requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation. A degree in civil engineering, construction management, or architecture gives you the strongest alignment. General management degrees may face additional USCIS scrutiny.
Highlight certifications alongside your degree
OSHA 30, PMP, or LEED credentials signal to employers that you can step in immediately. Sponsoring a visa is a significant commitment, and demonstrable certifications reduce the perceived hiring risk for employers considering international candidates.
Approach employers before a role is posted publicly
Construction firms often fill supervisory positions through referrals or direct outreach. Reaching out to project managers or HR contacts at companies with active projects can surface sponsorship opportunities that never appear on job boards.
Understand the difference between H-1B and TN eligibility
Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN status as engineers in a site supervisor role, which avoids the H-1B lottery. If TN applies to your situation, prioritize employers familiar with that pathway to speed up the hiring process.
Be explicit about your visa timeline in early conversations
Employers unfamiliar with sponsorship often overestimate the cost and complexity. Coming into interviews with a clear explanation of what the process involves, including timelines, builds confidence and keeps sponsorship from becoming a dealbreaker late in the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a site supervisor role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires site supervisor positions to meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning a specific bachelor's degree must be normally required for the job. Roles framed around civil engineering, construction management, or architecture typically qualify. Generic supervisory roles without a degree requirement often don't.
Do I need a four-year degree to get sponsored as a site supervisor?
For H-1B visa sponsorship, you generally need at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Australian applicants on the E-3 visa face the same requirement. If you hold a three-year degree, it may still be accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree depending on the field and employer. Significant field experience can sometimes substitute under the three-for-one rule, though this is harder to support for specialty occupation claims.
Which visa types do site supervisors most commonly use to work in the U.S.?
H-1B is the most common route for site supervisors whose roles qualify as specialty occupations. Canadian and Mexican nationals can pursue TN status if the position is classified as an engineering role. Australian citizens have access to the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is generally faster to obtain. The right visa depends on your nationality and how the employer defines the position.
How do I find employers who are willing to sponsor site supervisors?
The most reliable approach is to focus on companies with a history of sponsoring construction and engineering roles. Migrate Mate filters jobs by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse site supervisor openings from employers who have already indicated willingness to sponsor. Large general contractors, engineering firms, and federal project contractors are the most consistent sponsors in this field.
Are there practical factors that make site supervisor sponsorship harder than other construction roles?
Yes. USCIS scrutinizes site supervisor petitions more closely than clearly defined engineering roles because the title sounds managerial rather than technical. Employers need to document that the position genuinely requires a specific degree. If the job description emphasizes scheduling, coordinating subcontractors, or general oversight without tying responsibilities to engineering or technical expertise, the petition is more likely to face a Request for Evidence.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Site Supervisor jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
