Target universities and community colleges first
Higher education institutions file more H-1B petitions for Student Success Coordinators than any other employer type. They're also cap-exempt if affiliated with a nonprofit research mission, meaning you can start any time of year.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the role
H-1B approval requires a specialty occupation match. Degrees in education, counseling, psychology, or social work typically satisfy this. A general studies degree is unlikely to qualify without substantial relevant coursework or a related advanced degree.
Ask about cap-exempt status before applying
Nonprofit universities and affiliated research institutions are exempt from the H-1B annual lottery. If you're on OPT or in your grace period, a cap-exempt employer lets you start immediately without waiting for an October 1 start date.
Highlight caseload management and retention outcomes
Employers sponsoring this role want evidence of measurable impact. Quantify your work: students advised per semester, retention rates improved, or early alert interventions completed. Concrete outcomes strengthen both your job application and the visa petition.
Check whether the posting requires licensure
Some Student Success Coordinator roles require a licensed counselor or social worker. Licensed professional roles can actually strengthen an H-1B case by demonstrating specialty occupation status, but unlicensed applicants should clarify the requirement upfront.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Not every education employer sponsors visas. Migrate Mate filters roles by sponsorship history, so you spend time on positions where hiring international candidates is already established practice, not a conversation you have to initiate from scratch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Student Success Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but the determination is fact-specific. USCIS looks at whether the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Roles at universities that require a degree in education, counseling, or a related discipline typically qualify. Positions where any bachelor's degree is accepted regardless of field are more vulnerable to an RFE or denial.
Which visa types are most commonly sponsored for Student Success Coordinators?
H-1B visa is the most common pathway, especially at universities and education nonprofits. Some institutions also sponsor J-1 visas for exchange visitor programs. Candidates with an exceptional record in student affairs or published research may qualify for an O-1A. Australians working in this field can also explore the E-3 visa as an alternative to the H-1B lottery.
Do I need a master's degree to get sponsored for this role?
Not always, but a master's degree in counseling, higher education administration, or student affairs significantly strengthens your case. Many university job postings list a master's as required or strongly preferred, and it removes ambiguity about specialty occupation status. A bachelor's alone can work if the degree field closely matches the position description and the employer's job requirements are clearly defined.
Are Student Success Coordinator jobs at universities cap-exempt for H-1B?
Yes, if the university qualifies as a cap-exempt employer. Nonprofit universities, public universities, and institutions affiliated with cap-exempt research organizations can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without waiting for the lottery. This is one of the biggest practical advantages of targeting higher education employers specifically. Confirm cap-exempt status with the HR or international office before accepting an offer.
Where can I find Student Success Coordinator jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates and filters job listings by sponsorship history. This saves time by surfacing employers who have actually sponsored visas before rather than those who list it as a possibility but have no established process. Browse roles on Migrate Mate and prioritize postings from universities and education nonprofits, which are the most active sponsors in this field.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Student Success Coordinator jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
