How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Technology Consultant
Target firms with established sponsorship infrastructure
Large consulting firms like Deloitte, Accenture, and Infosys file hundreds of LCAs annually and have in-house immigration teams. These employers process petitions faster and with fewer complications than smaller firms sponsoring for the first time.
Understand the LCA before your offer letter arrives
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before your H-1B petition can proceed. Knowing this timeline helps you ask the right questions during the offer stage and avoid unexpected delays.
Specialization improves your petition's defensibility
Generalist technology consultant roles face more USCIS scrutiny than specialized ones. Roles tied to specific platforms, cloud infrastructure, or enterprise systems like SAP or Salesforce have a clearer degree-to-role connection that strengthens a specialty occupation argument.
Request a consulting agreement that specifies your work location
Technology consultants often work at client sites, which can complicate LCA compliance. Your employer must file an LCA covering each work location. Confirm this before signing your offer to avoid status issues when you rotate between client engagements.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a technology consultant role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, technology consultant roles generally qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a closely related field. However, USCIS scrutinizes generalist consulting titles more closely than specialized ones. If your role involves a specific technology stack, system, or domain, your employer should document that requirement explicitly in the petition to reduce the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Can I get sponsored as a technology consultant if my degree is in business, not a technical field?
It depends on how the role is defined. If the position requires a technical degree and your business degree included significant technology coursework, some employers supplement the petition with a credential evaluation showing equivalency. Alternatively, three years of qualifying work experience can substitute for one year of education under H-1B rules, so extensive relevant experience may bridge the gap. An immigration attorney can assess your specific credentials before you apply.
Which visa types do technology consultants typically use for U.S. work authorization?
The H-1B is the most common path for technology consultants from countries without a dedicated treaty visa. Australian citizens have access to the E-3, which is faster and avoids the lottery entirely. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN status under the USMCA if the role fits the defined TN categories. L-1 visas are also used for intracompany transfers within multinational consulting firms.
How do I find technology consultant roles that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists technology consultant roles filtered specifically for candidates who need sponsorship, so you're not sifting through postings from employers who won't sponsor. Large consulting firms are the most reliable sponsors, but mid-size technology services companies also sponsor frequently. Filtering by employer sponsorship history saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after an offer.
Does working at client sites affect my visa status as a technology consultant?
Yes, and this is a common compliance issue. Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application that covers every location where you perform work. If you rotate between client sites or work remotely from a state different from where your LCA was filed, your employer may need to file an amended petition or additional LCAs. Confirm with your employer's immigration team before accepting client assignments in new locations to avoid unintentional status violations.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Technology Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
