Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Benefits Consultant
Target consulting firms and insurance carriers first
Large HR consulting firms and insurance carriers sponsor Benefits Consultants far more frequently than smaller brokerages. Their established immigration programs mean faster LCA processing and less friction getting sponsorship approved through internal legal teams.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the role
H-1B approval requires your degree to match the specialty occupation. Human resources, business administration, finance, or actuarial science degrees typically satisfy this requirement. A general business degree may work, but a more specific field strengthens your petition significantly.
Emphasize benefits-specific credentials in your application
Certifications like CEBS, CBP, or GBA signal specialized knowledge that supports the specialty occupation argument for H-1B purposes. Employers also value these credentials when deciding whether a role justifies the cost and effort of sponsorship.
Australians should ask about the E-3 visa specifically
Australian citizens can use the E-3 visa for Benefits Consultant roles, which has no lottery, faster processing, and lower employer cost than H-1B. Many employers who hesitate on H-1B will readily sponsor an E-3 once they understand the difference.
Understand what the LCA process means for your timeline
Before your employer files an H-1B petition, they must obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from the Department of Labor. This typically takes one to two weeks and must be completed before your visa paperwork can be submitted.
Negotiate sponsorship before accepting an offer
Confirm your employer will sponsor the specific visa type you need before signing. Some firms sponsor H-1B transfers but not new cap-subject petitions, which affects whether you can start immediately or must wait for the next fiscal year lottery.

Find Benefits Consultant JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Benefits Consultant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as human resources, business administration, finance, or actuarial science. The key is that the job description must make a relevant degree a minimum requirement, not merely preferred. Roles framed as entry-level generalist positions without a degree requirement are harder to approve.
Which visa types are most common for Benefits Consultant sponsorship?
H-1B is the most common path, but Australian citizens often pursue the E-3 visa, which skips the lottery entirely and typically processes faster. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa if the role fits the applicable USMCA categories. L-1 transfers are also possible if you're moving from a foreign office of the same employer.
How can I find Benefits Consultant jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient place to find Benefits Consultant roles where employers are already open to sponsoring international candidates. Filtering for sponsorship-ready employers upfront saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking about sponsorship late in the process.
Does my degree need to be in human resources specifically to qualify?
Not necessarily. USCIS accepts degrees in related fields including business administration, finance, economics, and psychology for Benefits Consultant roles, provided the connection to the job duties is clearly argued in the petition. Actuarial science or risk management degrees are particularly strong for roles focused on health and retirement benefits plan analysis.
What are the H-1B approval odds for Benefits Consultant petitions?
Approval rates for Benefits Consultant H-1B petitions are generally solid when the specialty occupation argument is well-documented and the degree field aligns with the role. The bigger risk is the lottery, not the approval stage. Cap-subject petitions currently face a selection rate around 25%, meaning most registrants are not selected regardless of qualification.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Benefits Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
