Frame your role as a specialty occupation
H-1B approval depends on proving the position requires a specific bachelor's degree. Emphasize technical depth, not just coordination skills. Roles requiring a CS or engineering degree have a stronger specialty occupation case than general management positions.
Target employers with a history of sponsoring this title
Large tech employers and consulting firms sponsor Technology Project Managers regularly. Search Migrate Mate to find companies that have active H-1B filings for this title, which signals they understand the sponsorship process and are willing to do it again.
Get your LCA filed before your start date
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before submitting your H-1B petition. LCA approval typically takes five to seven business days. Make sure your employer starts this step early to avoid delays in your start date.
Lean on L-1A if you're transferring from an overseas office
If you've managed projects for the same company abroad for at least one year, an L-1A intracompany transfer visa may be a faster path than H-1B. It bypasses the lottery entirely and positions you well for an EB-1C green card later.
Clarify your degree field in the offer letter
If your degree is in a technical field like information systems, engineering, or computer science, make sure the job description explicitly ties those qualifications to the role. A vague offer letter is one of the most common reasons H-1B petitions for project management roles get scrutinized.
Use OPT strategically to prove your value before sponsorship
If you're on F-1 status, start in the role on OPT and build a strong performance record. Employers are far more willing to sponsor H-1B for someone who has already demonstrated results than for someone they haven't worked with yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Technology Project Manager role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but it depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation, meaning it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Technology Project Manager roles that require a CS, engineering, or information systems degree have a much stronger case than generalist PM roles where any degree is accepted.
What visa types are Technology Project Managers typically sponsored for?
H-1B visa is the most common path. L-1A is an option for project managers transferring from a foreign affiliate or subsidiary who have managed people or functions for at least one year. O-1A is possible for those with documented exceptional achievement, such as leading large-scale programs with industry recognition. Each visa has different requirements and timelines.
Is a computer science or engineering degree required to get sponsored as a Technology Project Manager?
Not always, but it helps significantly. Degrees in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or management information systems are most commonly accepted. PMP certification alone does not substitute for a degree in USCIS's evaluation. If your degree is in an unrelated field, your employer may need to show that your specific combination of education and experience still meets the specialty occupation standard.
How do I find employers who sponsor Technology Project Managers?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship, so you can search specifically for Technology Project Manager roles where employers have indicated they sponsor. Companies in enterprise software, consulting, financial services, and government contracting have historically filed the most H-1B petitions for this job title. Prioritizing employers with a track record of sponsoring this role reduces the risk of offers falling through during the immigration process.
What are common reasons H-1B petitions get denied for Technology Project Manager roles?
The most frequent issue is USCIS determining the role does not meet the specialty occupation definition, often because the job description accepts any bachelor's degree regardless of field. Other common problems include a mismatch between the applicant's degree field and the stated job duties, or a job description that emphasizes soft skills and coordination over technical expertise. A detailed, technically specific offer letter significantly reduces denial risk.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Technology Project Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
