Do companies sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Program Managers?
Yes, extensively. EPM roles require engineering or CS degrees, making H-1B classification straightforward. Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, and hundreds of tech and manufacturing companies sponsor routinely. L-1 transfers from international offices provide an additional pathway.
What is the typical compensation for sponsored EPM roles?
Engineering program managers at FAANG earn $200,000 to $420,000 with equity. Senior EPMs at growth-stage startups earn $180,000 to $320,000 with equity upside. Hardware EPMs at semiconductor companies earn $155,000 to $280,000. Directors of engineering programs earn $280,000 to $500,000.
What qualifications strengthen an EPM's sponsorship case?
A CS, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or technical management degree is required. PMP or PgMP certifications demonstrate program management methodology. Prior software engineering or hardware engineering experience combined with cross-functional leadership differentiates you from non-technical program managers.
How does an EPM differ from a Technical Program Manager for sponsorship?
The roles are largely equivalent for visa purposes. Both require technical degrees and involve coordinating engineering execution. Companies use different titles interchangeably. Google uses Technical Program Manager, Amazon uses Engineering Program Manager, and both classify identically for H-1B.
What is the career progression for a sponsored EPM?
The path moves from EPM to senior EPM to principal EPM to director of engineering programs to VP of engineering operations. Directors at FAANG earn $300,000 to $500,000 with equity. VPs earn $400,000 to $700,000. Some EPMs transition into engineering management or chief of staff roles.
