Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Ohio?
The standard path in Ohio is earning a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a closely related counseling field, then obtaining the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential through the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. Ohio does not issue a separate state license specific to vocational rehabilitation counselors, but most public agency and hospital positions require or strongly prefer the CRC. Many Ohio university programs, including those at Wright State and Ohio State, offer accredited rehabilitation counseling degrees that prepare graduates for the CRC exam.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in Ohio?
Companies currently hiring vocational rehabilitation counselors in Ohio include The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Mercy Health, and University Hospitals Rehabilitation Hospitals, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Ohio's large public workforce system, anchored by the Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation and county-level OhioMeansJobs centers, also generates consistent openings alongside nonprofit disability service organizations and regional hospital systems.
Which Ohio cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
Columbus, Cleveland, and Beachwood have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor openings in Ohio, driven primarily by the concentration of state agency offices, large nonprofit service providers, and major health systems in those metros, with Columbus standing out as the seat of the Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation's central operations and the state's largest workforce development infrastructure.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Ohio?
Yes, but they are limited, because vocational rehabilitation counseling typically involves in-person client assessments, job site visits, and coordination with local service providers that are difficult to conduct remotely. About 0% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those roles tend to focus on case documentation, intake coordination, or program oversight rather than direct client services.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a vocational rehabilitation counselor trainee or rehabilitation assistant position through the Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, which regularly recruits candidates who are still completing their master's degree or sitting for the CRC exam. Lateral moves from adjacent roles such as case manager, disability services coordinator, or employment specialist at Ohio nonprofit organizations like Goodwill Industries of the Great Lakes or county board of developmental disabilities offices are a common bridge. Completing a supervised internship with a state or county agency during your graduate program and earning CRC eligibility gives you the strongest edge over other entry-level applicants.
