Writer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a writer in Texas?
Most writer roles in Texas require a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a closely related field, though no state-issued license or registration applies to the profession. Employers across Texas industries typically evaluate candidates on portfolio quality alongside education. Building clips through university publications, local Texas news outlets, or freelance work for regional businesses is the most direct path to landing your first professional role in the state.
How much do writers make in Texas?
Writers in Texas earn a median of about $69,990 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,070 for the lowest 10% to over $125,240 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire writers in Texas?
Employers hiring writers in Texas right now include Writer, ECS Limited, and Aramco, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major university systems, and fast-growing technology and healthcare companies creates consistent demand for content, technical, and communications writers throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most writer jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Houston are the Texas cities with the most writer openings, driven by Austin's dense technology and startup ecosystem, Dallas's large corporate communications and marketing sector, and Houston's energy, healthcare, and professional services industries that rely heavily on technical and content writers.
Are there remote writer jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 22% of writer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how naturally suited the work is to distributed arrangements. Content marketing, copywriting, and technical writing roles are the sub-areas most likely to offer fully remote schedules, particularly at Texas-based technology companies and national brands headquartered in the state.
How can I get hired as a writer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building a portfolio through student publications, campus communications offices at Texas universities, or unpaid contributions to local news organizations before targeting junior or associate content roles. Large Texas employers in healthcare, technology, and higher education, including major hospital systems and state university communications departments, regularly hire editorial assistants and content coordinators as starting-point positions for candidates whose portfolios demonstrate clear, polished writing rather than a lengthy resume.
