Tips for Your Animal Surgeon Job Search
Tailor your resume to surgical caseload
Hiring committees want to see the volume and variety of procedures you've performed. Break out your surgical caseload by type, such as orthopedic, soft tissue, or neurological, so reviewers can quickly assess whether your experience matches their case mix.
Highlight board certification status clearly
ACVS diplomate status or eligibility changes which roles you can apply to and what compensation tier you land in. Put your certification status and the year earned in your header, not buried in a credentials section most readers skip.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists animal surgeon openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target hospitals by equipment and case complexity
A referral-only specialty hospital offers a very different caseload than a high-volume emergency practice. Filter your search by facility type so you're applying to environments where your surgical skill set gets used at the level you want.
Prepare case presentations for technical interviews
Many surgical interviews include a case review or grand rounds format where you walk through a challenging procedure. Prepare two or three cases that show your diagnostic reasoning, intraoperative decision-making, and how you managed complications.
Negotiate protected surgical time in your offer
Before signing, confirm how surgical cases are scheduled and whether you'll have dedicated OR blocks. Some multi-specialty practices assign surgeons to general practice coverage that erodes surgical volume, so get the allocation in writing.
Animal Surgeon Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most animal surgeons?
The companies hiring the most animal surgeons right now include Ethos Veterinary Health, BluePearl Pet Hospital, and PetVet Care Centers, with the largest share of openings in California, North Carolina, and Tennessee, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Specialty referral hospitals and emergency veterinary groups tend to post the highest volume of surgical openings overall.
How many animal surgeon jobs are remote?
About 0% of animal surgeon openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of surgical practice. The sub-areas most compatible with remote work are surgical consulting, telemedicine case triage, and continuing education instruction for veterinary staff.
How do you become an animal surgeon?
You earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited veterinary college, complete a one-year rotating internship, then match into a three-year surgical residency at an ACVS-approved training program. After residency you sit for the ACVS board examination. Passing makes you a diplomate and qualifies you for specialist positions at referral hospitals and academic medical centers.
How do you get hired as an animal surgeon with little experience?
Focus on roles that specify residency-trained or new diplomate welcome, which signals the practice is prepared to invest in someone building their surgical caseload. Shadow a senior surgeon during interviews to understand mentorship structure, and emphasize procedure breadth from your residency rather than case volume. Associate surgeon positions at multi-specialty hospitals are the most accessible entry point.
What does the animal surgeon interview process look like?
Most practices run a two-stage process: an initial phone or video screening with the medical director, followed by an on-site visit that includes a hospital tour, a case presentation or grand rounds session, and meetings with referring vets and support staff. Some programs ask you to observe or assist in a procedure. Final offers typically come within a few weeks of the site visit.
Where can I find and apply to animal surgeon jobs?
You can find and apply to animal surgeon jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from veterinary hospitals, specialty clinics, and emergency practices across the United States. Find roles that match your surgical focus and experience level, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
