Application Support Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a application support engineer in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, followed by hands-on experience with enterprise applications. California does not require a state-issued license for this role. Most employers expect familiarity with at least one major platform such as Salesforce or SAP, along with SQL skills. Vendor certifications from Salesforce, ServiceNow, or Microsoft are widely recognized by California employers and help candidates stand out early in their careers.
How much do application support engineers make in California?
Application support engineers in California earn a median of about $134,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,340 for the lowest 10% to over $222,690 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire application support engineers in California?
Employers hiring application support engineers in California right now include Super Micro Computer, MathWorks, and Monolithic Power Systems, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of enterprise software companies, health systems, and defense contractors means demand is distributed across both private-sector technology firms and large regulated industries.
Which California cities have the most application support engineer jobs?
San Jose, Santa Clara, and Los Angeles have the most application support engineer openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its density of enterprise software headquarters and cloud infrastructure companies, while Los Angeles draws demand from media technology, healthcare systems, and aerospace firms, and San Diego's concentration of biotech and defense contractors sustains a consistent volume of application support roles.
Are there remote application support engineer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields, since application support work is largely desk-based and conducted through remote access tools and ticketing systems. About 23% of application support engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed teams. Roles focused on monitoring, incident response, and SaaS platform administration tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a application support engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an IT help desk or junior systems administrator role at a California employer, which builds the troubleshooting and ticketing-system fluency that application support teams require. Large California health systems like Kaiser Permanente and technology employers regularly post associate support analyst openings that do not require prior application support experience. A Salesforce Administrator or ServiceNow Certified System Administrator credential is a concrete signal to California hiring managers that a candidate without direct experience is ready to contribute.
Where can I find and apply to application support engineer jobs in California?
