Architect Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an architect in Illinois?
To become a licensed architect in Illinois you must earn a professional degree from an NAAB-accredited program, complete the Architectural Experience Program, and pass all divisions of the Architect Registration Examination. The Illinois Design Professionals Licensing Board, which oversees registration in the state, then issues your Registered Architect credential. Illinois also participates in reciprocity through NCARB, so architects licensed in other states can transfer their credentials without repeating the full exam sequence.
How much do architects make in Illinois?
Architects in Illinois earn a median of about $81,780 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,890 for the lowest 10% to over $130,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire architects in Illinois?
Employers hiring architects in Illinois right now include Capgemini, Perficient, and CVS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's deep concentration of nationally recognized design firms and major public-sector clients in Chicago means openings appear across both private practice and institutional settings throughout the year.
Which Illinois cities have the most architect jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Bloomington lead Illinois for architect job openings. Chicago dominates because it is home to several of the largest architecture firms in the country alongside a continuous pipeline of civic, commercial, and residential projects, while smaller metros like Peoria and Rockford generate openings through healthcare system expansions and municipal infrastructure work with regional firms.
Are there remote architect jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're limited. Architecture is a largely hands-on discipline that requires site visits, client meetings, and coordination with contractors, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 80% of architect openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and these arrangements tend to apply most to schematic design, rendering, and specifications work rather than project management or construction administration phases.
How can I get hired as an architect in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an intern architect or architectural associate role at a mid-size Chicago firm while you are still completing the Architectural Experience Program hours. Large Illinois healthcare systems such as Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Medicine contract regularly with design firms that run structured internship pipelines for emerging professionals. Building a portfolio that includes academic or competition work, pursuing LEED Green Associate accreditation early, and joining AIA Illinois for networking with firms actively mentoring new graduates all strengthen your candidacy before licensure.
Where can I find and apply to architect jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to architect jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings across firms, institutions, and public agencies. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialization, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
