Assistant Store Leader Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an assistant store leader in Kentucky?
Most assistant store leaders in Kentucky start in hourly retail roles and move into shift supervisor or department manager positions before stepping up. Kentucky does not require a state license for retail management. Employers typically look for candidates with a combination of frontline retail experience and demonstrated leadership, and a business-related associate or bachelor's degree from institutions like the University of Kentucky or Western Kentucky University can strengthen your candidacy.
Which companies hire assistant store leaders in Kentucky?

Kentucky's large concentration of Kroger distribution and retail operations, along with Dollar General's Goodlettsville-adjacent footprint serving rural markets, makes the state a particularly active hiring ground for this role.

Yes, but they're rare. Assistant store leader roles are fundamentally floor-based positions requiring daily presence to manage teams, oversee operations, and respond to customer and staffing needs. About 0% of assistant store leader openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those listings typically involve district-support, training coordination, or multi-unit oversight functions rather than traditional single-store management.
How can I get hired as an assistant store leader in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a department lead or key holder at a Kentucky retailer and building toward an assistant store leader promotion internally. Kroger, Walmart, and Dollar General all run structured manager-in-training programs at Kentucky locations that are open to candidates without prior management experience. Completing a retail management certificate through Jefferson Community and Technical College or Sullivan University adds a credential that helps your application stand out in competitive markets like Louisville and Lexington.
