Bridge Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bridge engineer in New York?
The standard path in New York starts with a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an Engineer-in-Training. After gaining qualifying experience, you apply for a Professional Engineer license through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York requires the PE license for engineers who seal structural plans, and most bridge-focused employers treat it as a firm requirement for independent work.
How much do bridge engineers make in New York?
Bridge engineers in New York earn a median of about $103,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,290 for the lowest 10% to over $169,050 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire bridge engineers in New York?
Employers hiring bridge engineers in New York right now include CHA Consulting, Popli Design, and Stantec, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large public infrastructure budget means state and city agencies are consistently among the most active employers, alongside the national engineering firms they contract with for design and inspection work.
Which New York cities have the most bridge engineer jobs?
New York, Albany, and Rochester have the most bridge engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates because of the sheer scale of its transit and highway infrastructure managed by agencies like the MTA and NYCDOT, while Albany draws hiring from NYSDOT headquarters and statewide program offices, and Buffalo serves as the hub for western New York infrastructure projects and regional engineering firms.
Are there remote bridge engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 4% of bridge engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves field inspections, site coordination, and agency meetings that require in-person attendance. The tasks most commonly done remotely are preliminary design, report writing, and plan review for engineers already established with a firm or agency.
How can I get hired as a bridge engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior engineer or engineer-in-training role at a firm holding NYSDOT or MTA contracts, where structured mentorship and supervised field work are built into the position. Large New York employers like WSP, HNTB, and Jacobs run new-graduate programs that bring in civil engineering graduates directly from school. Sitting for the FE exam before graduation and completing any bridge inspection coursework gives a candidate a clear edge over those who wait.
Where can I find and apply to bridge engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to bridge engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings. Find the roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly through each listing.
