Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil engineering intern in Ohio?
Most civil engineering intern positions in Ohio require enrollment in or completion of a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program. Ohio does not require a license to work as an intern, but students can register as an Engineer Intern with the Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors after passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, which strengthens a resume considerably and starts the path toward a Professional Engineer license.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Ohio?
Employers hiring civil engineering interns in Ohio right now include Jacobs, RS&H, and Bohler, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Ohio's dense network of state and municipal infrastructure projects also means public agencies and regional consulting firms consistently post intern openings alongside the larger national firms.
Which Ohio cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
Columbus, Akron, and Canton lead Ohio for civil engineering intern openings. Columbus anchors the list through its rapid commercial and residential growth along with ODOT district offices, while Cleveland and Cincinnati draw intern demand from their established engineering consulting sectors, port and transit infrastructure, and proximity to major industrial and public works clients across the surrounding regions.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Ohio?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil engineering intern work is largely field- and project-site-oriented, so most roles require an in-person presence for site observation, surveying, or lab tasks. About 100% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those tend to involve CAD drafting, quantity takeoffs, or data analysis tasks that can be completed off-site.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to co-op and intern programs run by Ohio's large public-sector employers and regional consulting firms, since these roles are designed for students with limited field experience. ODOT's student internship program and municipal engineering departments in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati regularly hire candidates who are early in their academic programs. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building a portfolio of class projects in AutoCAD or Civil 3D gives candidates a clear edge over others at the same experience level.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the roles that fit your background, location, and the type of work you want to do, and apply directly to the positions that match.
