Clinical Medical Assistant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical medical assistant in California?
California does not issue a state license for clinical medical assistants, but most employers require a nationally recognized certification such as the Certified Medical Assistant credential from the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Registered Medical Assistant credential from American Medical Technologists. Candidates typically complete an accredited medical assisting program at a California community college or vocational school, then sit for a certifying exam. Many California employers also require a current BLS certification before hire.
How much do clinical medical assistants make in California?
Clinical medical assistants in California earn a median of about $49,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,290 for the lowest 10% to over $77,300 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical medical assistants in California?
Employers hiring clinical medical assistants in California right now include Stanford Health Care, University of California - San Francisco, and UCLA Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense network of integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and large multi-specialty medical groups means consistent openings are distributed across the state rather than concentrated in a single employer.
Which California cities have the most clinical medical assistant jobs?
San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles have the most clinical medical assistant openings in California. Los Angeles anchors the largest share due to its scale of hospital systems and outpatient clinics, while San Diego's concentration of military-affiliated medical facilities and research institutions sustains strong demand, and the Bay Area's large integrated systems like Kaiser Permanente generate consistent volume in suburban and urban locations alike.
Are there remote clinical medical assistant jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Clinical medical assisting is a hands-on role centered on direct patient contact, so most positions require in-person attendance at a clinic or facility. About 1% of clinical medical assistant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those postings typically involve telehealth support, patient scheduling coordination, or remote chronic care management rather than traditional clinical duties.
How can I get hired as a clinical medical assistant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited medical assisting program at a California community college, many of which include externship placements at local clinics that convert to job offers. Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health both run new-graduate and apprenticeship pipelines that accept candidates without prior work history. Lateral moves from medical receptionist, patient care technician, or phlebotomy roles are common entry points, and holding a current CMA or CCMA certification gives candidates a clear advantage in competitive California markets.
Where can I find and apply to clinical medical assistant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to clinical medical assistant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
