Communications Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a communications manager in Illinois?
Most communications manager roles in Illinois require a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. Illinois does not have a state-issued license for communications managers, so hiring decisions hinge on experience and portfolio. Many Illinois employers in healthcare and government also value candidates who have completed accreditation through the Public Relations Society of America, which offers the Accredited in Public Relations credential recognized across the state.
Which companies hire communications managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring communications managers in Illinois right now include JPMorganChase, ADM, and HLK, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major health systems, and large public universities means a broad and consistent range of organizations regularly post for these roles.
Which Illinois cities have the most communications manager jobs?
Chicago, Mettawa, and Evanston are the Illinois cities with the most communications manager openings. Chicago drives the largest share of demand given its concentration of corporate headquarters, national nonprofits, and major health systems, while Peoria and Springfield generate consistent openings through regional healthcare networks, state government agencies, and established manufacturing companies headquartered in central Illinois.
Are there remote communications manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 78% of communications manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and largely digital nature of the work. Strategy, content development, and internal communications functions are the most frequently offered as fully remote, while roles requiring regular media appearances or in-person stakeholder engagement tend to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a communications manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a coordinator or specialist role first, then building toward a manager title. Large Illinois employers such as Advocate Health Care, Northwestern University, and the City of Chicago regularly bring on communications coordinators and public affairs associates from new-graduate pools. A strong portfolio of writing samples, a campus newspaper background, or an internship with an Illinois state agency or nonprofit can substitute for years of experience in many cases.
Where can I find and apply to communications manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to communications manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the Illinois market. Find roles that fit your experience and location preference and apply directly to the employer through each listing.
