Technical Sales Specialist Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical sales specialist in Illinois?
Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in engineering, a hard science, or business, paired with product-specific training completed on the job or through a manufacturer's certification program. Illinois does not require a state-issued license to work as a technical sales specialist. The most direct path is to start in a technical role such as applications engineer or field support, build product expertise, then move into a quota-carrying sales position with an Illinois-based distributor, manufacturer, or software company.
How much do technical sales specialists make in Illinois?
Technical sales specialists in Illinois earn a median of about $99,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,570 for the lowest 10% to over $162,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical sales specialists in Illinois?
Employers hiring technical sales specialists in Illinois right now include H&R Block, Sourcebooks, and The GEO Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's concentration of industrial manufacturers, medical device firms, and enterprise technology companies means openings appear steadily throughout the year, not just in seasonal hiring windows.
Which Illinois cities have the most technical sales specialist jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Naperville post the highest volume of technical sales specialist openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its density of corporate headquarters, distribution hubs, and healthcare systems, while suburban corridors like Downers Grove and Rosemont host major manufacturing and technology employer campuses that generate consistent territory-based sales roles.
Are there remote technical sales specialist jobs in Illinois?
Yes, though they are somewhat limited because technical sales often requires on-site product demonstrations, lab visits, or plant walkthroughs with clients. About 62% of technical sales specialist openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with fully remote roles concentrated in SaaS and cloud infrastructure sales where demos happen over video rather than in person.
How can I get hired as a technical sales specialist in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a sales development representative or applications support role at an Illinois industrial distributor or medical device company, where you build product knowledge before carrying your own quota. Large Illinois employers such as Grainger and Abbott run structured rotational and associate programs that bring in candidates from engineering or science backgrounds with no prior sales experience. Earning a product-specific certification from a manufacturer, or completing a technical degree at an Illinois university with a co-op component, signals readiness to Illinois hiring managers who routinely promote from within.
Where can I find and apply to technical sales specialist jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to technical sales specialist jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings. Find roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit.
