Tips for Your Communications Manager Job Search
Tailor your resume to the channel
Communications managers are hired for very different skill sets depending on whether the role is internal, external, or PR-focused. Rewrite your resume summary and top bullet points to match the specific channel each job emphasizes, not just the title.
Build a writing portfolio before you apply
Most hiring managers will ask for writing samples. Prepare a short portfolio with three to five pieces that show range: a press release, an internal announcement, and a social or executive communications example are strong starting points.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists communications manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by industry, not just title
A communications manager role at a hospital operates very differently from one at a tech startup. Search by industry alongside the job title so you're applying to environments where your existing domain knowledge and vocabulary give you a real advantage.
Prepare a measurable impact story for interviews
Interviewers for communications roles consistently ask how your work changed perception, drove engagement, or managed a crisis. Prepare two or three specific examples with outcomes you can describe concretely, like audience growth, media coverage, or reduced escalation volume.
Negotiate using scope, not just base pay
When an offer comes in, clarify budget authority, headcount, and agency relationships before accepting. Communications managers who negotiate these terms upfront avoid finding out later that the title was senior but the actual decision-making authority was not.
Communications Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most communications managers?
The companies hiring the most communications managers right now include Amazon, TikTok, and Google, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Healthcare systems, technology companies, and large nonprofits consistently account for a significant portion of active openings.
How many communications manager jobs are remote?
About 31% of communications manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible roles at the manager level. Internal communications and corporate communications sub-areas tend to have the highest share of remote-eligible positions, while crisis communications and government affairs roles more often require on-site presence.
How do you become a communications manager?
Most communications managers start in a coordinator or specialist role in public relations, corporate communications, or content, then build toward management by owning campaigns end-to-end and developing writing and media skills. Gaining experience across both internal and external communications, managing vendor or agency relationships, and demonstrating measurable results are the steps that typically move candidates into their first manager title.
Can you get hired as a communications manager with little experience?
It's possible, but you'll need to compensate with a strong portfolio, demonstrated ownership of communications projects, and relevant volunteer or freelance work. Candidates who have managed a nonprofit's communications, led a publication, or handled PR independently often succeed in breaking into manager-level roles earlier by showing they can own a function, not just contribute to one.
What does the communications manager interview process look like?
Most processes include an initial recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation focused on your experience and communications philosophy, and a skills exercise such as a writing sample, a mock press statement, or a strategic communications plan for a hypothetical scenario. Final rounds typically involve meeting cross-functional stakeholders and, at larger organizations, a presentation to senior leadership.
Where can I find and apply to communications manager jobs?
You can find and apply to communications manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your background, industry preference, and location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
