Tips for Your Insurance Sales Representative Job Search
List your state insurance licenses first
Hiring managers scan for license status before anything else. Put your resident state license, lines of authority, and any non-resident licenses in a dedicated credentials section at the top of your resume, not buried in a footnotes or a skills list.
Quantify pipeline and retention numbers
Replace vague phrases like 'exceeded goals' with figures tied to policies written, renewal retention rate, or new premium generated per quarter. Interviewers in insurance sales weigh numbers over adjectives, so give them something concrete to anchor your performance.
Target openings by carrier model not just title
Captive carriers, independent agencies, and direct-to-consumer insurers hire for different sales motions. Filter your search by company type so your prospecting style, compensation expectations, and book-of-business ownership preferences actually match the role before you apply.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists insurance sales representative openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a ride-along or shadow interview
Many agencies ask final candidates to observe a producer for a half day before an offer. Treat it as a two-way evaluation: ask how the agency sources leads, handles referrals, and structures renewals, because those answers reveal whether the role fits your workflow.
Negotiate your book-of-business transition terms
If you're moving from one agency to another, clarify upfront whether your existing clients can follow you and whether there's a non-solicitation clause. Getting this in writing before you accept protects the relationships you've already built.
Insurance Sales Representative Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most insurance sales representatives?
The companies hiring the most insurance sales representatives right now include State Farm, The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company, and Liberty Mutual Insurance, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and Ohio, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Both captive carriers and independent agency groups are actively expanding their producer headcount across personal and commercial lines.
How many insurance sales representative jobs are remote?
About 23% of insurance sales representative openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote availability concentrated in roles focused on inbound leads, phone-based personal lines sales, and group benefits consulting rather than field-based commercial account management, which typically requires in-person client visits.
How do you become an insurance sales representative?
You need to pass your state's pre-licensing course for the lines of authority you want, such as property and casualty or life and health, then pass the state licensing exam. After you're licensed, most entry-level roles provide product training. Building a referral network and developing consultative selling skills accelerates your path to senior producer or account executive roles.
Can you get an insurance sales representative job with little or no experience?
Yes, many captive carriers and independent agencies hire candidates with no prior insurance experience as long as you're willing to obtain your state license before your start date or within a defined onboarding window. Backgrounds in retail sales, financial services, or customer service translate well. Emphasizing your ability to prospect, build relationships, and handle objections matters more than insurance-specific experience at the entry level.
What does the insurance sales representative interview process look like?
Most interviews include an initial phone screen to confirm licensure status and sales background, followed by one or two in-person or video rounds with a sales manager or agency owner. You'll typically discuss your prospecting methods, how you handle objections, and your experience with a specific book of business. Some agencies add a behavioral assessment or a brief ride-along before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales representative jobs?
You can find and apply to insurance sales representative jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your license type, preferred market, and experience level, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
