Tips for Your Business Development Manager Job Search
Quantify pipeline and revenue contributions
Hiring managers expect numbers. Replace vague language like 'grew revenue' with specific outcomes: the size of the deals you closed, the percentage you exceeded quota, or the total pipeline value you managed. Business development roles are results-driven, so your resume has to be too.
Tailor your pitch to the sales motion
Inbound-led and outbound-led companies expect different things from a business development manager. Read the job description closely for clues: words like 'hunter,' 'prospecting,' or 'cold outreach' signal one environment, while 'partnerships' or 'account expansion' signal another. Match your resume language to the motion they use.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists business development manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings that match your deal size
Business development managers who have closed six-figure enterprise deals are a different hire than those who have worked in high-velocity SMB sales. Filter your search by company size and average contract value where possible, and lead with that context in your cover letter so hiring teams self-select.
Prepare a narrative for your win-loss record
Interviewers at growth-stage and enterprise companies often ask you to walk through a deal you lost and what you learned. Have a specific, honest example ready. Candidates who can analyze failure credibly stand out more than those who only talk about wins.
Negotiate using comp structure, not just base
Business development manager offers vary widely in how commission, accelerators, and equity are structured. Before negotiating, ask exactly how OTE is calculated and what percentage of reps hit it. That information changes what a competitive offer actually looks like for your situation.
Business Development Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most business development managers?
The companies hiring the most business development managers right now include Amazon, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Google, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially high at SaaS companies, staffing firms, and financial services organizations actively expanding their sales teams.
How many business development manager jobs are remote?
About 34% of business development manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible roles in sales and go-to-market functions. Partnership-focused and SaaS-oriented roles tend to offer the highest share of remote arrangements, while field-based or enterprise roles more often require in-person presence.
How do you become a business development manager?
Most business development managers start in sales development, account executive, or account management roles and build toward the title over several years. The path typically involves consistently hitting quota, developing skill in consultative selling, learning to manage a full sales cycle, and demonstrating the ability to open new markets or relationships rather than just maintain existing ones.
Can you get hired as a business development manager without much experience?
You can break into business development manager roles with limited direct experience if you come from an adjacent function like sales development, marketing, or customer success. Highlight any work where you built relationships, identified growth opportunities, or moved prospects through a pipeline. Smaller companies and startups are more likely to take a chance on candidates who show strong commercial instincts and a clear hunger to develop.
What does the business development manager interview process look like?
The process usually starts with a recruiter screen focused on your sales background and motivation, followed by a hiring manager conversation about your approach to pipeline building and deal strategy. Later rounds often include a case study or mock pitch where you present a go-to-market plan or walk through how you would pursue a target account. Reference checks and a final executive conversation are common at the end.
Where can I find and apply to business development manager jobs?
You can find and apply to business development manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each listing.
