Communications Manager Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a communications manager in Maryland?
The path to a communications manager role in Maryland typically starts with a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a closely related field. Maryland does not require a state-issued license for this role, but many employers, particularly in federal contracting and healthcare, prefer candidates with credentials such as the Accreditation in Public Relations designation from the Public Relations Society of America. Building experience in government affairs, healthcare, or nonprofit communications gives candidates a strong edge in Maryland's market.
Which companies hire communications managers in Maryland?
Employers hiring communications managers in Maryland right now include Leidos, CohnReznick, and Ripple Effect, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Maryland's concentration of federal contractors, major health systems, and research universities means communications roles here often require experience with public affairs, regulatory messaging, or mission-driven storytelling.
Which Maryland cities have the most communications manager jobs?
The cities with the most communications manager openings in Maryland are Bethesda, Baltimore, and Derwood. The Baltimore metro drives much of the volume through its large hospital networks, universities, and nonprofit sector, while the Montgomery County and Prince George's County suburbs attract openings tied to federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology firms headquartered near Washington D.C.
Are there remote communications manager jobs in Maryland?
Yes, and more than most fields. Communications manager work is largely desk-based and well-suited to remote arrangements. About 82% of communications manager openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the role involves writing, strategy, and digital coordination rather than on-site presence. Roles focused on media relations, content development, and internal communications tend to offer the most flexibility.
How can I get hired as a communications manager in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a communications coordinator or public affairs assistant role, which large Maryland employers like Johns Hopkins Health System, the University of Maryland, and state agencies regularly post as stepping stones. Building a portfolio of writing samples, press releases, and digital content strengthens any application. Volunteering for communications work at Maryland nonprofits or advocacy organizations is a recognized way to gain real experience, and completing the Accreditation in Public Relations process signals professional commitment to hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to communications manager jobs in Maryland?
