The Position:
Religion – Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Religion department, beginning in August of the 2026-207 academic year, with possibility of renewal for one additional year upon mutual agreement.
We seek a creative and reflective teacher, trained in the study of religion or related fields, who is enthusiastic about serving general education students enrolled in courses that fulfill the College’s “Reasoned Examination of Faith” (REF) requirement. All students take one REF course, given the institutional commitments of the College as a Lutheran institution. All Religion Department faculty staff these courses, each of which critically analyzes questions and topics related to religious traditions, including Christianity, often in relation to other religious, ethical, or historical traditions/topics; seeks to raise student interest in these questions and topics; and enables students to connect what they learn to broader areas of their educations, vocations, and personal lives. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate commitment to and/or excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; capacity to bring creative, reflective ideas for structuring one or more REF sections; and commitment to fostering equity and inclusion.
We welcome historical, theological, ethical, ethnographic, comparative, or other scholarly approaches to any of the Department’s REF sections. We welcome the development of new REF course names/topics as well, to be taught after one or two terms of staffing one or more of the current REF offerings. Ideal candidates would be able to staff RELG 284/384, “Buddhism and Film” in the fall semester of 2026. In subsequent years, there may be opportunities to teach RELG 150, “Encountering Religion.” The successful candidate will teach 24 credits per 10-month academic year (standard courses are 4 credits), consisting of two semesters and an intensive J-term.
Requirements: What We're Looking For:
- Terminal degree/PhD is desired in Religious Studies or related fields; ABD will be considered.

Target academic and faculty roles first
Augustana College's visa sponsorship activity is concentrated in academic and instructional positions. Focus your search on faculty, lecturer, and research roles where the college has a clearer pathway and precedent for sponsoring international candidates.
Understand the H-1B timeline for higher education
Colleges like Augustana often file H-1B petitions tied to the academic hiring calendar, not just the April lottery window. Cap-exempt status may apply for certain roles, so clarify this early with the hiring department before assuming standard deadlines.
Leverage F-1 OPT and CPT as an entry point
Augustana College sponsors F-1 OPT and CPT, which can serve as a bridge into longer-term employment. If you're a recent graduate, starting under OPT gives both you and the college time to assess fit before pursuing H-1B sponsorship.
Connect with the international services office early
Augustana's international or human resources office manages visa processes internally. Reaching out early signals seriousness and gives you accurate information about which roles are eligible for sponsorship before you invest time in a full application.
Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
For H-1B eligibility at a liberal arts college, your degree must directly match the role's requirements. Emphasize subject-specific expertise and graduate-level qualifications in your application materials to meet the specialty occupation threshold USCIS requires.
Find verified sponsorship roles through Migrate Mate
When targeting smaller colleges like Augustana, it's easy to waste time on roles that won't lead to sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and focus only on employers who have actually filed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Augustana College sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Augustana College does sponsor H-1B visas. Sponsorship is most common for faculty and specialized academic or administrative roles that meet the specialty occupation standard. As a smaller liberal arts institution, Augustana sponsors selectively rather than at high volume, so it's worth confirming sponsorship eligibility directly with the hiring department before applying.
What visa types does Augustana College sponsor?
Augustana College sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas, as well as TN visas for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals. This range reflects the college's need to support both student-adjacent roles and specialized professional positions. If you hold one of these visa statuses or are eligible, Augustana is worth targeting in your job search.
Which departments or roles at Augustana College are most likely to offer visa sponsorship?
Visa sponsorship at Augustana College is most commonly associated with faculty positions and roles requiring advanced subject-specific expertise, such as instructors, visiting professors, and research-adjacent staff. Departments in sciences, social sciences, and professional programs tend to recruit from a broader international pool, increasing the likelihood that those roles will include sponsorship.
What is the typical hiring and sponsorship timeline at Augustana College?
Academic hiring at institutions like Augustana generally runs on a fall-to-spring cycle, with faculty positions often posted between September and February for appointments beginning the following academic year. H-1B petitions for cap-subject roles must be filed by April 1, so timing your application to align with this calendar is important. Start conversations with the hiring committee as early as possible.
How do I find open visa-sponsored jobs at Augustana College?
The most reliable approach is to search directly on Augustana's careers page for open positions, then cross-reference with a platform that tracks actual sponsorship history. Migrate Mate lets you browse verified sponsoring employers and filter roles by visa type, so you can confirm that Augustana has sponsored the visa category you need before committing to an application.
