Position Overview
Autodesk is shaping the future of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry by building the operational product data platform that powers the industry’s design, collaboration, and lifecycle workflows. We are seeking a Senior Director of Engineering to lead the team responsible for the AEC Data Model, the core platform underpinning these capabilities across our product portfolio.
Reporting to the VP of AEC Data, as Sr. Director of Engineering within Autodesk’s AEC Data team, you will lead the evolution and engineering delivery of the AEC Data Model, enabling the next generation of product data capabilities for the Autodesk Forma Industry Cloud. This platform is centered on operational product data and systems of record, while also interfacing with analytics and machine learning systems and evolving to support broader data and intelligence use cases. In this role, you’ll work with leaders from Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Autodesk Platform Services, Autodesk Construction Solutions, Generative Design, and Forma Design to unify complex, historically fragmented design data across Autodesk’s ecosystem into a coherent, scalable platform.
The successful candidate is an experienced engineering leader with a passion for large-scale systems and building high-performing teams. They combine deep technical expertise, innovative engineering practices, and leadership presence to drive alignment and execution across product, platform, and ecosystem teams.
As this role oversees a global organization, you will work across multiple time zones and travel up to 20% for team offsites and internal and customer events.
The role can be based in the US, Canada, or the UK with Eastern time zone preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering execution of the AEC Data Model roadmap, translating product strategy into scalable, high-quality systems
- Build and evolve the engineering organization to deliver predictable execution, high quality, and operational excellence
- Hire, mentor, and retain the next generation of engineering leaders
- Serve as a senior leader within the AEC Data team, shaping organizational strategy, prioritization, execution, and innovation across the portfolio
- Partner with product, platform, and ecosystem teams to drive adoption of the AEC Data Model across Autodesk’s product portfolio, influencing architecture and data standards across independent teams and taking ownership of critical cross-product initiatives
- Define the long-term evolution of Autodesk’s AEC domain data model and influence broader technical strategy around domain data, interoperability, and platform architecture
- Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and engineering practices, identifying and driving adoption of innovations that materially improve platform capabilities and developer productivity
Minimum Qualifications
- 15+ years of software engineering experience, with 5+ years leading managers and senior leaders across global teams
- Demonstrated ability to adopt and scale AI-driven engineering practices to accelerate delivery and improve developer effectiveness
- Proven track record of owning and delivering large-scale, complex systems or platforms with measurable business impact
- Experience building and scaling high-performing engineering organizations, including org design and leadership development
- Established history of driving operational excellence (quality, reliability, scalability, and execution predictability)
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud platforms, high-scale transactional environments, and modern software architecture patterns
- Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to align product, platform, external, and executive stakeholders
- Ability to understand complex business requirements and quickly and iteratively execute against them in a highly matrixed environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or leading domain-specific data platforms (e.g., AEC, BIM, GIS, manufacturing, or other complex object models)
- Experience with schema evolution, versioning, and backward compatibility in long-lived, large-scale systems
- Understanding of how operational product data interfaces with analytics, AI, and downstream data platforms
- Experience influencing industry standards, data interoperability frameworks, or open ecosystems
- Track record of driving platform adoption across large, federated organizations
- Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or related field

Align your degree to Autodesk's specialty occupation standard
Autodesk engineering roles typically require a degree in computer science, software engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. A degree in an unrelated discipline, even with strong experience, can complicate H-1B specialty occupation eligibility for these positions.
Target product and platform engineering teams specifically
Autodesk's core hiring for engineers concentrates in product development, cloud platform, and design infrastructure. Applying to roles in these areas signals a match with their established sponsorship patterns rather than emerging or experimental divisions where headcount and sponsorship commitment vary.
Start your OPT clock before your offer letter expires
If you're on F-1 OPT targeting Autodesk, confirm your OPT end date against the H-1B cap-subject filing window. USCIS requires the petition to be filed before your OPT expires, and the April 1 earliest filing date is a hard constraint you can't negotiate around.
Browse open Engineering roles on Migrate Mate
Filter Migrate Mate's job board for Autodesk engineering openings that explicitly support visa sponsorship. This saves time you'd otherwise spend cross-referencing job postings that don't disclose sponsorship status upfront.
Clarify Green Card pathway support during the offer stage
Autodesk has sponsored PERM-based Green Card petitions for engineering staff. Before signing an offer, ask your recruiter directly whether your role is eligible for EB-2 or EB-3 PERM sponsorship and what the typical timeline looks like for your level.
Prepare your credentials for Australian and Canadian visa tracks
Autodesk sponsors E-3 visas for Australian engineers and TN status for Canadian and Mexican engineers. Both require a confirmed job offer and proof of qualifying credentials before filing, so have your degree documents and transcripts verified and ready before your start date.

Find Engineering at Autodesk JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Autodesk sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Autodesk sponsors H-1B visas for engineering roles. The company has a history of filing H-1B petitions across software, mechanical, and product engineering functions. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions are subject to an annual lottery, timing your application cycle and confirming role eligibility with your recruiter early in the process matters significantly.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Autodesk?
Apply directly through Autodesk's careers site, where engineering roles are listed by product area and team. You can also browse Autodesk engineering positions filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where sponsorship is confirmed. Tailor your application to the specific engineering domain, whether that's cloud infrastructure, CAD platform development, or simulation software.
Which visa types does Autodesk commonly sponsor for Engineering roles?
Autodesk sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT for engineering positions, along with EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways for longer-term employees. Australian engineers are well-positioned for the E-3, which has no lottery and can be renewed indefinitely. Canadian and Mexican engineers can pursue TN status, which is processed at the port of entry without a USCIS petition.
What qualifications does Autodesk expect for Engineering roles?
Most Autodesk engineering roles require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field. For H-1B purposes, the degree must directly relate to the job's duties. Senior and staff-level roles typically expect several years of industry experience in relevant domains such as cloud architecture, developer tooling, or CAD and simulation software development.
How do I plan the timeline for visa sponsorship at Autodesk?
The critical constraint for most engineering candidates is the H-1B filing window. USCIS opens lottery registration in March, with an October 1 start date if selected. If you're on F-1 OPT, you need enough OPT time remaining to bridge to that start date, or you'll need cap-gap protection. For E-3 and TN, Autodesk can begin the process after an offer is accepted, and timelines are significantly shorter.
