Align Your Credentials with CUNY Standards
CUNY faculty and professional positions often require credentials evaluated against U.S. academic standards. Get your foreign degree officially evaluated before applying so hiring committees can immediately assess your qualifications without delays.
Target Roles That Qualify as Specialty Occupations
Not every Education role at CUNY supports H-1B sponsorship. Positions requiring a specific bachelor's degree or higher, such as academic advisor, lecturer, or research specialist, are stronger candidates for specialty occupation classification under USCIS criteria.
Understand CUNY's Multi-Campus Hiring Structure
CUNY operates across more than 20 colleges and graduate schools, each with its own HR process. Identify which specific campus is hiring and confirm their sponsorship capability directly, since resources and precedents can vary between campuses.
Search Education Openings Using Migrate Mate
Filter Education jobs at CUNY by visa type on Migrate Mate to surface roles where sponsorship has been offered before, saving you from applying to positions where international candidates have historically not been considered.
Start the LCA Process Before Your Offer Deadline
For H-1B transfers or new filings, your employer must certify a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process the petition. Build at least several weeks of LCA preparation time into your negotiation timeline so your start date stays on track.
Use OPT and CPT Strategically to Build CUNY Experience
If you're completing a U.S. degree, F-1 OPT lets you work at CUNY for up to 12 months, or 36 months in STEM-adjacent fields. Use that time to demonstrate your value before your employer initiates a longer-term sponsorship pathway.

Find Education at City University of New York JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does City University of New York sponsor H-1B visas for Educations?
CUNY does sponsor H-1B visas for qualifying Education roles, though not every position in the department meets the specialty occupation standard USCIS requires. Roles that demand a specific bachelor's degree or higher, such as academic coordinator, lecturer, or research analyst, are the strongest fits. Positions with generalized degree requirements are harder to support under H-1B, so confirm sponsorship intent early in the interview process.
How do I apply for Education jobs at City University of New York?
CUNY posts openings through its central jobs portal and individual campus HR sites. Review the position description carefully to confirm it aligns with your visa type before applying. Prepare a U.S.-style resume, any required teaching or research statements, and foreign credential evaluations if applicable. Raising visa sponsorship during the initial screening call, rather than after an offer, helps avoid wasted time on both sides.
Which visa types are commonly used for Education roles at City University of New York?
CUNY has experience with several visa categories for Education staff and faculty. H-1B is common for professional and academic roles meeting specialty occupation criteria. J-1 is frequently used for visiting scholars, researchers, and exchange faculty. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying Education occupations. F-1 OPT and CPT can bridge the gap for students completing U.S. degrees before pursuing longer-term sponsorship.
What qualifications are typically expected for Education roles at CUNY?
Expectations vary by role level. Faculty positions generally require a terminal degree in the relevant field. Professional Education staff roles, such as advisors, coordinators, or instructional designers, typically require a bachelor's degree in a related discipline plus direct experience in higher education settings. For international applicants, foreign degrees should be formally evaluated by a NACES-accredited agency to confirm U.S. equivalency before you apply.
How do I find Education jobs at CUNY that are open to visa sponsorship?
Browse current Education openings at City University of New York filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where employers have a history of sponsoring international candidates. This is faster than reviewing individual campus portals and helps you prioritize applications where sponsorship is a realistic outcome rather than an open question.
