INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. Align your credentials to U.S. academic standards
CUNY's hiring committees evaluate foreign degrees closely. Get your academic transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before applying, so your degree equivalency is clear and ready to include in your application materials.
Target departments with active hiring cycles
CUNY posts Instructor openings at the department level across more than 20 colleges. Filter by borough and discipline on the CUNY jobs portal to find postings that match your field, since not every campus hires for every subject each semester.
Clarify visa sponsorship intent before your interview
CUNY's HR processes vary by campus. Ask during the screening stage whether the specific college supports the visa type you need, because sponsorship decisions are made at the campus level, not centrally, and assumptions can cost you time.
Understand how J-1 and TN status fit Instructor roles
For Canadian nationals or exchange visitors, J-1 and TN status are realistic options for teaching roles at CUNY. Confirm with the hiring department whether your role qualifies under the TN educator category or meets J-1 program requirements before accepting an offer.
Build your profile around publication and teaching experience
CUNY Instructor roles in competitive departments expect documented teaching experience and, for PERM-based sponsorship pathways like EB-2 or EB-3, a demonstrated specialty occupation profile. Organize your CV to show field-specific expertise, not just general teaching history.
Find CUNY Instructor openings on Migrate Mate
Searching for visa-friendly faculty positions manually is slow. Use Migrate Mate to filter CUNY Instructor roles by visa type so you can focus your applications on postings that match your sponsorship situation from the start.

Find Instructor at City University of New York JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does City University of New York sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
CUNY does sponsor H-1B visas for Instructor positions, though sponsorship is handled at the individual college level rather than centrally across the system. Roles that qualify as specialty occupations, typically requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, are the most likely candidates. Confirm sponsorship willingness with the specific campus HR office during the hiring process.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at City University of New York?
Applications for CUNY Instructor roles are submitted through the CUNY employment portal at cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/hr/careers. Each posting is listed by college and department. You'll typically need a cover letter, CV, and teaching statement. Some departments request writing samples or diversity statements. Requirements vary by campus, so read each posting carefully before applying.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructor roles at City University of New York?
CUNY sponsors several visa types for Instructor roles depending on the candidate's background and the position's requirements. H-1B is the most common pathway for specialty occupation roles. J-1 is used for exchange visitor arrangements. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying educator categories. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship is possible for longer-term hires, and F-1 OPT or CPT can cover early-stage employment for current students.
What qualifications does City University of New York expect for Instructor positions?
Most CUNY Instructor postings require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant discipline, though some fields require a doctoral degree or equivalent professional experience. Prior college-level teaching experience is standard, and many departments expect candidates to show familiarity with diverse student populations. For visa-sponsored hires, your degree must clearly correspond to the specialty area of the role.
How do I find and track Instructor openings at CUNY that offer visa sponsorship?
Filtering for visa-sponsored faculty roles manually across CUNY's decentralized college system takes time. Migrate Mate aggregates Instructor openings at CUNY and lets you filter by visa type so you can see which positions match your sponsorship needs without reviewing every posting individually. From there, you can apply directly through CUNY's own portal.
