INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. Credential your degree for U.S. academic standards
CUNY hiring committees assess international degrees against U.S. equivalency standards. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before you apply so your transcript reads clearly to a department chair comparing candidates.
Target colleges within CUNY individually
CUNY is a system of distinct campuses, each with its own HR and hiring pipeline. A teaching role posted at Baruch is a separate application from one at Hunter or Brooklyn College, so research departmental fit and apply to each campus directly.
Negotiate sponsorship before the offer is finalized
Public university HR departments move through standardized offer letter templates. Raise the visa sponsorship question during the verbal offer stage, not after paperwork starts, so the department can loop in CUNY's international personnel office before anything is issued.
Track PERM timelines if a Green Card is your goal
CUNY has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 green cards for teaching faculty. PERM labor certification through DOL currently takes over a year before USCIS even sees the I-140 petition, so start that conversation with your department as soon as your H-1B is approved.
Browse CUNY teaching openings on Migrate Mate
CUNY posts teaching roles across a large number of campuses and disciplines. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions at CUNY by visa sponsorship type so you are only applying to roles that match your current status and sponsorship needs.

Find Teaching at City University of New York JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does City University of New York sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes. CUNY sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying teaching and faculty positions that meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific academic field. Tenure-track and full-time lecturer positions are the most common qualifying roles. Adjunct appointments are usually not eligible for H-1B sponsorship because they do not meet the full-time employment threshold USCIS requires.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at City University of New York?
Applications go through CUNYfirst, the university system's centralized jobs portal, or through individual campus HR pages depending on the position. Each college within CUNY manages its own hiring, so a teaching role at Queens College and one at City College are separate processes. You can also browse visa-sponsored teaching openings at CUNY filtered by your immigration status on Migrate Mate before going to the official application portal.
Which visa types does City University of New York commonly use for Teaching roles?
CUNY sponsors several visa categories for teaching faculty. H-1B is the primary route for full-time and tenure-track positions. J-1 is used for visiting scholars, exchange faculty, and short-term academic appointments. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying teaching fields. For permanent positions, CUNY has a track record of supporting EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM labor certification for long-term faculty.
What qualifications does City University of New York expect for Teaching roles?
Requirements vary by appointment type and discipline. Tenure-track positions almost always require a terminal degree, which means a Ph.D. for most academic fields or an MFA for fine and performing arts. Lecturer and instructor roles may accept a master's degree with significant teaching or industry experience. International applicants should have a credential evaluation completed in advance, as CUNY HR and department committees will assess how a non-U.S. degree maps to these benchmarks.
How do I manage the timing between a CUNY offer and my visa filing?
H-1B petitions for university employers can be filed year-round because higher education institutions are cap-exempt, meaning CUNY does not need to wait for the annual H-1B lottery. This significantly compresses your start date timeline. USCIS standard processing currently runs several months, but CUNY can request premium processing through USCIS to get a decision in roughly 15 business days. Confirm the cost and process with CUNY's international personnel office early.
