Job Description
Pillsbury’s prominent Private Client & Family Office practice group is seeking to hire a mid-level Associate to join its New York office. This position offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated domestic and international planning matters for ultra-high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and closely held businesses, with a particular focus on complex trust structures and income tax planning.
We are open to candidates with either significant trusts & estates, private client, or tax experience who are interested in developing holistic expertise to service family offices. Candidates must be hardworking and dedicated to learning and growing in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication, analytical, and time management skills, superior judgment, proficiency in Excel, and ease in working with numbers are musts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise ultra-high-net-worth individuals, multigenerational families, and family offices on sophisticated estate, gift, and income tax planning matters.
- Draft and implement complex estate planning structures, including:
- Irrevocable grantor and non-grantor trusts
- Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts (ILITs)
- Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts (GRATs)
- Charitable trusts (CRTs/CLTs)
- Structure and advise on tax-efficient wealth transfer strategies, including lifetime gifting, succession planning, and family governance structures.
- Provide counsel on individual and fiduciary income tax matters, including planning for closely held businesses and investment structures.
- Work closely with family offices, fiduciaries, accountants, and investment advisors on integrated planning solutions.
- Serve, where appropriate, in a role analogous to “outside general counsel” for family offices, helping to identify legal needs, coordinate advice, and manage matters across multiple disciplines.
- Collaborate with and help coordinate attorneys across tax, corporate, real estate, litigation, and other practice areas to deliver seamless, holistic advice tailored to client objectives.
- Support trust and estate administration, including advising on fiduciary duties and tax reporting considerations.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate is required to have a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctorate degree (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school with excellent academic credentials. Must be barred in New York. Previous or current employment with an Am Law 100 firm is preferred.
New York Pay range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on skillset and experience, is $310,000 - $390,000.

Align your degree to the role
Pillsbury hires for roles requiring a specific field of study, not just any bachelor's degree. Before applying, confirm your degree maps directly to the position's specialty occupation classification. A law degree, business degree, or relevant graduate credential should match the job description precisely.
Research Pillsbury's practice group structure
Pillsbury operates across litigation, corporate, real estate, and regulatory practice groups. Targeting your application to a specific group where your background fits strengthens your case. Attorneys and professional staff in specialist roles are the most likely candidates for E-3 sponsorship at a firm like Pillsbury.
Verify prevailing wage before your offer stage
Pillsbury must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your job title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations so your expected salary already clears the threshold before the LCA is submitted.
Use Migrate Mate to confirm Pillsbury's E-3 filing history
Before reaching out to Pillsbury's recruiting team, use Migrate Mate to review the firm's E-3 LCA filing history by role and location. Knowing which practice areas and offices have sponsored E-3 visas helps you target the right team and frame your application around roles the firm has already sponsored.
Prepare your specialty occupation documentation early
For a law firm role, USCIS will expect evidence that your position requires a specific degree in a related field. Gather your academic transcripts, credential evaluations, and any professional certifications before you receive an offer so Pillsbury's legal team can move quickly once an offer is extended.
Clarify visa processing timelines with the hiring team
E-3 visas are typically processed at the U.S. consulate in Australia, not through USCIS, so your start date depends on consulate appointment availability. Confirm with Pillsbury's HR or immigration counsel early whether they'll coordinate the LCA filing and how much lead time they need before your intended start date.
Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP E-3 Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman sponsor E-3 visas?
Yes, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman sponsors E-3 visas for Australian nationals in qualifying roles. As a global law firm, Pillsbury has supported E-3 applications for professionals in legal and business functions. Sponsorship is role-specific and typically requires the position to meet the specialty occupation standard under USCIS guidelines.
Which roles at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman typically receive E-3 sponsorship?
E-3 sponsorship at Pillsbury is most common for roles that require a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a related field. Attorney positions, legal analysts, and specialist business professionals within practice groups such as corporate, litigation, and regulatory are the most likely candidates. General administrative roles are unlikely to qualify under the specialty occupation standard.
How do I apply for an E-3 visa through Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman?
Once Pillsbury extends an offer, their immigration counsel files a Labor Condition Application with DOL. After LCA certification, you apply for the E-3 visa directly at a U.S. consulate in Australia, typically in Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth. Pillsbury's HR team usually coordinates the LCA process, so confirm their internal timeline before accepting an offer.
How long does the E-3 sponsorship process take at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman?
The LCA certification with DOL typically takes around seven business days. After that, your timeline depends on consulate appointment availability in Australia, which can range from a few weeks to several months depending on location and season. Build at least six to eight weeks into your planning between offer acceptance and your intended U.S. start date.
How do I find open E-3 roles at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman?
Migrate Mate lists E-3-eligible positions at law firms including Pillsbury, filtered by the firm's verified LCA filing history. You can also monitor Pillsbury's careers page directly and filter by U.S. office locations. When reaching out to recruiters, confirm upfront that the role is open to E-3 sponsorship to avoid advancing through a process that won't lead to an offer.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 sponsorship at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman?
E-3 employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, determined when they file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, ensuring Australian hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
