Target faculty and research roles first
Oakland University's Green Card sponsorship activity is concentrated in academic and research positions. Faculty appointments, postdoctoral roles, and specialized research staff are the most likely pathways to employer-sponsored permanent residence at the university.
Understand the EB-2 and EB-3 distinction
Oakland University typically files under EB-2 for roles requiring advanced degrees or exceptional ability, and EB-3 for professional positions. Knowing which category applies to your role helps you set realistic timeline expectations before accepting an offer.
Raise sponsorship early in the hiring process
University HR departments plan immigration support well in advance. Asking about Green Card sponsorship during the offer negotiation stage, rather than after onboarding, gives Oakland University's legal team time to initiate the PERM labor certification process promptly.
Confirm the role qualifies for PERM sponsorship
Not every position at Oakland University triggers Green Card sponsorship. Tenure-track faculty lines and long-term professional staff roles are stronger candidates than fixed-term contracts. Confirm the role's permanent nature before counting on sponsorship support.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsorship roles
Migrate Mate surfaces verified Green Card sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history. Searching Oakland University specifically helps you identify active openings where sponsorship has been confirmed, saving time over general job boards.
Build a long-term relationship within the institution
Universities often sponsor Green Cards for employees who have demonstrated value over time. Starting in an H-1B visa or OPT-supported role at Oakland University can create a natural pipeline toward permanent residence sponsorship as you establish your record there.
Oakland University Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Oakland University sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, Oakland University sponsors Green Card visas for eligible employees, primarily in faculty and specialized professional roles. Sponsorship is not automatic with every hire, so candidates should confirm support during the offer process. Oakland University works with immigration counsel to manage EB-2 and EB-3 filings on behalf of qualifying staff.
Which roles and departments at Oakland University are most likely to receive Green Card sponsorship?
Academic departments hiring tenure-track or research faculty are the strongest candidates for Green Card sponsorship at Oakland University. Specialized professional roles in areas like information technology, engineering, and health sciences may also qualify. Roles that are permanent in nature and require a specific advanced degree tend to meet the threshold for PERM-based sponsorship.
How do I start the Green Card process at Oakland University?
The process typically begins with your hiring department and HR working with Oakland University's immigration attorney to determine whether your role qualifies for PERM labor certification. From there, the university files the PERM application with the Department of Labor, followed by an I-140 immigrant petition. Your involvement is primarily in providing documentation of your qualifications.
How long does the Green Card process take at Oakland University?
The full Green Card process at Oakland University, from PERM filing through final approval, generally takes several years depending on your visa category and country of birth. PERM labor certification alone can take over a year. Applicants from India and China face significantly longer waits due to visa backlog queues. Starting the process as early as possible is strongly advisable.
How do I find open Green Card sponsorship jobs at Oakland University?
Migrate Mate lists verified employer sponsors and lets you filter roles by sponsorship type, including Green Card. Searching Oakland University directly on Migrate Mate shows open positions where sponsorship history has been confirmed, which gives you a clearer picture than general job boards. Always verify sponsorship intent with the hiring department before investing time in a long application process.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at Oakland University?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
