Target faculty and research roles first
Penn State's Green Card sponsorship is concentrated in tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and specialized professional staff. Applying to administrative or general support roles rarely leads to sponsorship, so focus your search on academic departments and research centers where sponsorship is standard practice.
Understand which EB pathway fits your role
Faculty positions with a doctoral requirement typically qualify for EB-2, while staff roles may fall under EB-3. If your work has national importance and you hold an advanced degree, ask your department about EB-2 National Interest Waiver eligibility, which bypasses the PERM labor certification process entirely.
Document your specialty occupation credentials early
Penn State's HR and immigration teams review credential equivalencies before committing to PERM sponsorship. Have your foreign degree evaluated by a NACES-member credential service and gather publication records, grants, and professional references before you receive an offer, not after.
Raise sponsorship during the offer negotiation stage
Universities routinely build Green Card sponsorship into faculty offer letters, but it isn't automatic for all roles. Ask specifically whether the position includes PERM filing support and confirm which legal fees the university covers, since DOL rules prohibit employers from charging employees for PERM costs.
Check prevailing wage requirements for your role
PERM requires Penn State to pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating salary to confirm your offer meets or exceeds the required wage level, which affects both PERM approval and your EB-2 or EB-3 petition.
Use Migrate Mate to find active sponsorship openings
Search Migrate Mate to identify Penn State University roles with verified Green Card sponsorship history filtered by department and job type. This lets you target positions where sponsorship is already established rather than requesting it from scratch, which significantly improves your chances of a successful outcome.
Penn State University Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Penn State University sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, Penn State University sponsors Green Card visas, primarily for faculty, researchers, and specialized professional staff. Sponsorship is most common in tenure-track and research-intensive roles where the university has a demonstrated need that can support the PERM labor certification process or qualify for an EB-2 petition.
Which roles at Penn State typically receive Green Card sponsorship?
Sponsorship is most consistently offered for tenure-track faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral researchers transitioning to staff roles, and certain IT or engineering professionals in specialized units. Administrative, clerical, and general support positions rarely receive Green Card sponsorship, as the PERM process requires demonstrating that no qualified U.S. worker is available.
How do I start the Green Card process at Penn State University?
The process typically begins after you receive a formal offer. Penn State's Office of Human Resources coordinates with outside immigration counsel to assess your EB pathway, initiate prevailing wage determination with DOL, and file the PERM application. You'll need to provide degree credentials, employment history, and documentation supporting your qualifications for the specific role.
How long does Green Card sponsorship take at a university like Penn State?
PERM labor certification alone can take six to twelve months with DOL, followed by the I-140 petition with USCIS. If your priority date is current, adjustment of status or consular processing adds additional time. Faculty from countries with high EB demand, such as India or China, may face multi-year waits due to visa backlogs.
How do I find Penn State University jobs that offer Green Card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters Penn State University job listings by verified Green Card sponsorship history, so you can identify roles where sponsorship is already part of the offer rather than negotiating it from scratch. Focusing on positions with an established sponsorship track record in academic or research departments gives you the strongest starting point.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at Penn State University?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
