Target research and faculty pipelines first
Rutgers sponsors H-1B most reliably for tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and research scientists. Focus your application effort on departments with active grant funding, where international hires are routine and HR staff are experienced processing H-1B paperwork.
Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Before accepting an offer, confirm your position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Use O*NET to check the occupational profile for your role and ensure your degree field directly aligns, since USCIS scrutinizes this match closely for university staff positions.
Use Migrate Mate to check Rutgers LCA filings
Pull Rutgers's Labor Condition Application history on Migrate Mate to see which job titles and departments have active H-1B filings. This tells you which roles have a documented sponsorship track record before you invest time in the application process.
Confirm prevailing wage compliance during offer negotiations
Rutgers must pay you the higher of the actual or prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your position through the OFLC Wage Search using your SOC code and New Jersey wage level to verify your offered salary meets DOL requirements before countersigning.
Align your application timeline with the H-1B cap
Rutgers is a cap-exempt employer as a nonprofit educational institution, meaning it can file your H-1B petition at any time without waiting for April 1 or the annual lottery. You and your hiring manager can set a start date based on operational need, not the cap cycle.
Prepare your credential documentation before the offer stage
Rutgers HR typically requires a foreign credential evaluation for degrees earned outside the U.S. Commission a report from a NACES-member evaluator early so you're not delaying the I-129 filing after your offer letter arrives, especially for roles where degree equivalency is part of the specialty occupation argument.
Rutgers University H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Rutgers University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Rutgers University sponsors H-1B visas across its academic, research, and administrative divisions. As a nonprofit educational institution, Rutgers qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and specialized professional staff are the most commonly sponsored categories.
Which departments at Rutgers University are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas?
Research-intensive departments in science, engineering, medicine, and technology tend to sponsor H-1B visas most frequently at Rutgers. The Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences division and grant-funded research centers are particularly active. Administrative and IT roles in central university operations also appear regularly in Rutgers's Labor Condition Application filings.
How do I navigate the H-1B filing process at Rutgers University?
Once Rutgers extends an offer, the Office of Human Resources coordinates with an immigration attorney to prepare the Labor Condition Application and I-129 petition. You'll need to provide degree certificates, transcripts, and a foreign credential evaluation if your degree was earned abroad. USCIS processes the petition after DOL certifies the LCA, typically within a few months under standard processing.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take at Rutgers University?
Because Rutgers is cap-exempt, there's no lottery wait. After an offer is confirmed, LCA certification with DOL takes around seven business days. Standard USCIS processing for the I-129 petition can run several months, while premium processing reduces the adjudication decision to roughly 15 business days for an additional government fee.
How do I find open H-1B roles at Rutgers University?
Search Rutgers's careers portal filtering for positions in research, faculty, and specialized professional categories. Migrate Mate surfaces Rutgers job listings filtered by verified H-1B filing history, so you can prioritize roles in departments that have already sponsored the visa type. Applying to teams with an established H-1B track record meaningfully reduces friction during the offer and filing stages.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Rutgers University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
