Job Roles at Sam Houston State University
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Sam Houston State University H-1B Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target faculty and research postings first
Sam Houston State University's H-1B sponsorship is concentrated in academic and research roles. Focus your search on tenure-track faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and specialized professional staff positions, where sponsorship is far more common than in administrative roles.
Connect directly with the international office early
SHSU's Office of International Programs coordinates H-1B petitions with Human Resources. Reaching out before you apply signals genuine interest and helps you understand their internal sponsorship approval timeline before an offer is extended.
Align your credentials with the specialty occupation standard
H-1B approval requires your role to qualify as a specialty occupation. For university positions, your degree must directly relate to the job. Make sure your CV clearly demonstrates that connection between your academic background and the specific role.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsorship opportunities
Migrate Mate surfaces verified H-1B sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and find open roles at institutions like Sam Houston State University without guessing which employers will actually support your visa application.
Understand the cap-exempt advantage universities offer
As a public university, Sam Houston State University qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. This means petitions can be filed at any time of year, without entering the annual lottery, giving you more flexibility on start dates and timelines.
Apply well ahead of your intended start date
University hiring cycles move on academic schedules. Factor in both SHSU's internal approval process and USCIS adjudication time when targeting a start date. Applying to positions at least six months out gives the process room to unfold without pressure.

Does Sam Houston State University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Sam Houston State University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying positions, primarily in faculty, research, and specialized professional roles. As a public university, SHSU is a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions year-round without being subject to the annual lottery. Sponsorship decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and require departmental and HR approval.
Which roles and departments at Sam Houston State University are most likely to offer H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at SHSU is most common in academic departments hiring tenure-track or visiting faculty, research-intensive programs, and specialized professional staff roles that require a specific degree in a directly related field. Departments in STEM, business, health sciences, and the humanities regularly hire through this pathway. Administrative and support roles rarely qualify for H-1B sponsorship.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Sam Houston State University?
Once a job offer is extended, SHSU's Human Resources department works with the Office of International Programs to initiate the H-1B petition. The university typically retains immigration counsel to prepare and file Form I-129 with USCIS. You will need to provide documentation of your degree credentials, employment history, and any current visa status. The process is employer-driven, so close communication with HR is essential.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at Sam Houston State University?
Because SHSU is cap-exempt, there is no lottery wait, but internal approval and USCIS adjudication still take time. Standard USCIS processing can take several months, though premium processing is available for faster adjudication. Factor in SHSU's internal HR and legal review on top of that. Planning for a total timeline of three to six months from offer to work authorization is a reasonable expectation.
How do I find open H-1B jobs at Sam Houston State University?
Start by monitoring SHSU's official careers page for faculty and professional staff openings. Migrate Mate is also worth using, as it aggregates verified H-1B sponsor job listings so you can filter specifically for employers with a confirmed sponsorship track record, including universities like Sam Houston State University. Applying through official channels and following up with the department directly improves your visibility.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Sam Houston State University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
