Does Sonoma State University sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Sonoma State University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying positions. Sponsorship is primarily extended to faculty, researchers, and specialized academic staff where the role requires a specific advanced degree. Not every open position at the university includes H-1B sponsorship, so confirming eligibility with HR before applying is important.
Which roles and departments at Sonoma State University are most likely to offer H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at Sonoma State University is most common in tenure-track and visiting faculty positions, postdoctoral research roles, and highly specialized professional staff appointments. STEM departments, health sciences, and social sciences faculty searches are areas where specialty occupation requirements are easiest to establish, making H-1B petitions more straightforward to support.
How does the H-1B application process work at Sonoma State University?
Once Sonoma State University extends a job offer, their HR or international services office coordinates the H-1B petition process. This includes obtaining a certified Labor Condition Application from the Department of Labor, then filing Form I-129 with USCIS. The university acts as the petitioner and covers the core filing steps, though timelines depend heavily on when in the academic hiring cycle an offer is made.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take at Sonoma State University?
Standard USCIS processing for an H-1B petition can take several months. For cap-subject petitions, Sonoma State University must file during the annual H-1B lottery period for an October 1 start date. If your role qualifies as cap-exempt through a university affiliation, processing can begin any time. Factor in Labor Condition Application certification time, which typically adds a few weeks before USCIS filing.
How do I find open H-1B jobs at Sonoma State University?
Check Sonoma State University's official careers portal for current openings, and look specifically for postings that mention visa sponsorship or are targeted at specialized academic roles. Migrate Mate is also worth using, as it surfaces verified H-1B sponsors in the education sector and lets you filter opportunities by sponsorship history, saving time you'd otherwise spend vetting employers manually.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Sonoma State University?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
